Does anyone know where to look for an exploded view diagram of the 82 CBX550
starter motor?

Google seemed to be broken when I tried searching for one!

Why do you need the exploded view?

I doubt it is all that difficult to remove from the bike, but
of course I could be wrong. IME most Jap starter motors are
much the same, series wound types, but again I don't know the
particulars of that model, and it's not one sold in the US
as far as I know so it's not showing up in the many US-centric
fiches, which seem to be far less common in other markets,
with the exception of cmsnl.com which I assume you've already
tried.

Speaking of cmsnl.com, they say that the 1983 CB550SC Nighthawk
was based on the CBX550 engine so I am sure the starters should
be the same, and there are plenty of exploded views of that
starter out there on all the usual sites, including cmsnl.com.

The starter has been apart a couple of times - I did a rush job of filing
down CB200 brushes to fit the holders, the bodge lasted about 4 months.

When that bodge failed I filed another 4 CB200 brushes and took the time to
do a neat and accurate job - unfortunately, neither time did I lift out the
brush plate to study what's underneath.

Naturally I decided it was high time I ordered the correct spares so I can
do the job properly next time it fails, the problem is that the replacement
brushes look nothing like the one's in the Haynes manual exploded diagram.

There are a few inconsistencies in the Haynes manual - firstly; the text
describes 2 of the brushes being connected to field windings - pretty
unlikely since its a permanent magnet motor, secondly the exploded view
diagram shows 2 brushes with crimp tags to fit under the head of the M6
terminal lug, thirdly the brushes termination method in the exploded view is
nothing like the genuine Honda spares that arrived from the parts supplier.

The new brushes are attached to the ends of a curved pressed steel thing
with an M6 clearance hole in the middle - also consistent with going
straight to the terminal lug, as in no field coils.

Thanks - I'd forgotten about the Nighthawk, its something else I can search.

Who cares what the Haynes manual shows? It's not uncommon for Haynes
to have the wrong illustrations and/or descriptions. You have the OEM
starter in front of you so you can make your own exploded view.

If you are reasonably sure you have the original starter from a CBX550,
order correct replacement parts for a 1982 CBX550 starter and install
them, end of story. If those parts don't fit the starter you have,
then investigate to make sure actually have a CBX550 starter, otherwise
forget about CB200s and Haynes manuals.

FWIW, the Haynes manual for my sons's Escort estate has all sorts of
illustrations for various things that don't match the car I have, but
it doesn't worry me, it's just what you get when you take the pikey
route and don't want to buy the genuine factory workshop manual, which
I usually do for all my 'good' cars and bikes.

Ah, right. I had a look at cmsnl but that didn't have the CBX550. Never
knew there was a Nighthawk version.

The cmsnl site has an exploded view of the Nighthawk starter, the brushes
assy looks the same as David Silver sent, it looks different mechanically
though - it appears to have a conventional gear train reduction instead of
planet-gear.
