Today I noticed my bike had used a bit of oil so I decided to top it up.
Sadly I was a little enthusiastic in topping up and over filled pass the top
mark on the little oil window. So I decided to have a go at changing the
oil.

In the hand book it says when you remove the oil drain plug there should be
a "sealing washer"
When I removed the drain plug I never saw this washer. Is it important as
I've refilled the bike, been for a ride and everything seems to be ok.

The 'washer' may be an aluminium or copper washer that was attached to
the drain plug.As the plug is tightened, the washer deforms
slightly, moulding itself to the drain plug, so the washer and drain plug
appear to be 'one'.

So long as you've tightened the nut up properly, your back wheel won't be
sliding around in the oil you're leaking all over the road ;-)

Isn't the XL125 the same basic engine as the CG125, or am i thinking of a
different little Honda trail bike?

The "seal" is at the bottom of the hot drained oil(1)

1. I have done this many times.

Either the washer is still attached to the drain plug (quite common), or
it fell into the oil (equally common).

If you don't have a washer, you *will* get a leak from the drain plug.
DAMHIKIJK, OK. You also run the risk of stripping the threads in the
sump.

Grovel under the bike and examine the sump plug *closely* with a torch.
As Alan says, the washer is usually aluminium - occasionally copper. It
should be visible if you wipe the plug clean.

If you can't see it, remove sump plug, drain oil, replace washer, refill
with new oil.

Yeah, well your opinion is worth utter ratshit, because you don't know
what you're on about. Having an insecure sump plug is potentially
catastrophic, both for the engine and anyone following behind, so they
have to be lockwired for racing.

Given that, some know-nothing twonk merely prompting his two penn'orth
because he likes the sound the keyboard makes when he hits it is
actually likely to de a damn sight more harm than good.
