Part of all the work I did on my 1981 Honda CB650C was a valve adjustment
(my experience with cars has been that this job is often ignored as it is a
fussy, labor intensive job that no one is willing to pay what it's worth). I
have to admit, of all the cars & a couple of bikes I've done valve
adjustments on (no, no shims, just rocker arms with screws & locknuts), this
bike is the first vehicle for which I *had* to get the factory tool -- there
was just no reaching in there with a box wrench.
Anyway, first ride out afterward and it seems like I'm getting more valve
tapping type noise than before. Is it possible the extra noise is coming out
of exhaust leaks (wonky 2-into-1 connections, as well as worn/re-used
headpipe gaskets)? Or should I guess that after all these years I finally
screwed up a valve adjustment?...

More noise is not necessarily a bad thing in a mechanical valve
train. Everything I've ever read says a lack of noise means too
tight.

Screw type valve adjusters will sometimes dish out the tip of the valve
stem and then your feeler gauge will hit the edges of the dish, but
when the motor runs the
screw adjuster will go another two thousandths of an inch and the
valves will be noisy...

What? I used a ring spanner and pliers to turn locknut and tappet. No
whahala.
