Bikes are dangerous and injure you

A clumsy **** post.

I took my K1100 for an MOT yesterday and the tester asked if I could
give a hand with the brake test and the headlight test.

The MOT bay was a bit restricted and the tester was holding the bike up
by the left hand bar, normally I'd get on the bike when it was on its
centre stand. I put my right hand on the tank and swung a leg over...

Sudden, blinding, pain followed. Not sure what I did but I think I put
a lot of weight through my right hand and bent my index finger back
further than it likes to go. It hurt all day (mildly after the initial
shock subsided). This morning the bottom joint and much of my palm
between the thumb and the index finger is greatly swollen. Movement is
realy very restricted in the bottom joint.

Arse.

Ouch. I'll see your hurty finger & raise you a hurty knee. Did
something to it yesterday when windsurfing, but I've no idea what. It
started to hurt a tiny bit when lugging my kit back up the beach, then
when I tried to get out the car after the 2.5 hour drive home, I nearly
passed out.

It's ok when dead straight, but trying to bend it either way is
absolute ****ing agony. A night's resting it hasn't helped, so I think
I'll be dragging myself up to casualty in a bit.

Sounds like a subluxation, a sort of dislocation that puts itself back in
place.
However, the ligaments will be stretched and painful for quite a while and
you need an x-ray to rule out a fracture. Get yerself off to A&E this
morning as early as poss - it'll be quiet and you'll go through quickly.

There is a very distinct painful bit. If you sit with yer legs straight
out, there's a sort of big dimple just below the kneecap on the inside
of your leg. The bit that hurts when I poke it is the hard lump at the
bottom of that dimple, so about halfway between kneecap & back of knee.

Which sounds to me like the result of it getting a good whack, but I
didn't notice it at the time. The water was pretty cold though so maybe
it was just a bit numb.

I fear it's a bit late for that now after faffing around trying to get
upstairs & figuring out how to get in the shower. A&E's probably full
of Sunday morning football injuries by now, so I'll leave it 'til this
evening.

it's 'cos you're old, I'm afraid. And being old, the recovery time
will be so much longer than when you weren't old.

When I was helping Nige get the 12R into the back of the van a month
or so, I dinged my knee on the van's bumper. It hurt like ****, and
the bruise took about 3 weeks to fade.

Arse, as you say.

I thought we were going to get another post describing an off road
accident, not a whinge because you've bent your finger enough to make it
swell up a bit.

What you need to remember is that I bent my finger a bit more than I'd
have liked to and ended up having it pinned until the bone had fused.

That sounds just like tendonitis.

I found myself in A&E (1) in Tuscany a few years ago after a day on
one of those tree top adventure park places. It was, without doubt,
the most painful thing I have ever experienced. (2)

(1) or whatever it is in Italian
(2) I've never done anything really bad to myself.

It has its compensations. But, in this case I think it would have hurt
even in my 20s.

Being stupid and clumsy is what really sucks.

Not likely 'cos I've decided to replace the piston in the KTM (done).
It comes apart really nicely for a ten year old bike. Absolutely no
****ed fastners... is this a first?

Old piston wasn't so bad, ring gap beyond spec so it needed doing. The
replacement piston (vertex) is rated for 20 hours use...

Next to get on the bench is the WR to have a new barrel and piston
fitted. I might have ordered the wrong one because it is 290cc.

Thanks for that. Swelling gone down a bit mainly 'cos I've been using
it to pull the engine apart.
