We took the kids to a zoo (Adelaide I think) and the pigmy hippo had a
crap in what was near clear water. It dispersed it using his tail as a
propeller. The pool turned instantly dark. A woman standing next to us
threw up.

I believe that this is done to ensure that their territory is marked
with their scent and not, as someone suggested "because they enjoy it".
