It is finely written. It strays however. Into the old socialist invective
that really belongs in the first half of last century. "Class" is a worn out
term. In modern Britain people are divided by intelligence, aspiration, and
education. Those are just the Human Condition. And still by inherited
wealth, which don't want to grasp because it may include the house that
*they* hope to inherit too.
It also recounts a lie. That the Welfare State is being destroyed. It is
being refined to deal with more people claiming less resources. Well, UK is
declining in terms of percentage of global wealth/trade. It is being refined
as nobody is (was ever) prepared to support those who are simply lazy. But
is potentially strengthened if it becomes more fit for purpose.
It does allude to what a lot of Irishmen have said to me over the years.
Nationalism, Independence and the dictatorship of the RCC were the worst
things that happened in Ireland and devolution within the UK would have been
so much better. But if you believe some, it started as a grass roots
Marxist revolution and got subverted at the end by vested interests who used
it to take an even firmer grip, so you can kinda understand how it panned
out.
