That's still substantially longer than the Maya themselves lasted!

i won't get into the politics, but i don't think the honda entry was ever a
full factory effort ('88). it was the superbike in its puriest form before
factory teams started to get involved. sure honda was looking at it with
interest and gave little support where merkel needed (from what i read
anyway), but i don't think they were ever serious. bimota (who ran a ducati
engine?) was serious though.

What you say is true (except Bimota ran Yammie engines back then) but I can't remember Ducati being any more
serious than Honda in '88.
Did anyone even run the old 851?
I can't remember Ducati getting into it until Roche on the 888 in the nineties...
[wracks brain]
I think they did half a season on the 851 in 1989 with Marco Lucchinelli...

Ha ha; Did Ducati beat Honda in THEIR first full go at wsbk in 1990?!!?

and exactly that. if it's just down to purely the motorcycle (and possibly
the rider too), the honda was better.

Funny that you've mentioned that year because Merkel was pretty furious that
Honda didn't bother to lend a hand and that got him real mad. I think Honda
was more or less didn't show much interest until '94 (500 gp was more
important to them i guess) with the rc45. They had the RVF or whatever prior
to this but I don't think that was eligable under the wsbk rule. Nothing
really to marvel about with a factory beating a semi works team. Bt all
credit to ducati for the 916 series, came out and won it in their first
year. To bad that it didn't quite achieve its ultimate design goal as an
endurance racer (i know.. cheap shot). An it's ashame that sir Carl Forgarty
couldn't achieve the same dominance on the RC45, didn't take him long to
duck his tail and head back to the luxury of the vtwin advantage eh?

But Honda proved a few points or so when they beat Ducati with their own
vtwin (dominated from the very 1st round, '01 was probably a bad year due to
Honda's focus on the rcv project). I mean face it, Ducati had how many years
under their belt with the vtwin? And it's pretty embaressing to brag about
Ducati's current motoGP achievements. Honda only had their rcv racing for
only 2 seasons (incld this year) and the best Ducati could do was playing
2nd fiddle or as mobile chicane for Rossi and Sete (and occasionally Max).
The win in Catayluna was because of Rossi's arrogance. But I won't take the
credit away from Ducati, they make pretty looking bikes.
