I race a 1974 Honda XL350 in flattrack. I made an exhaust down pipe for
this bike, using the OEM flange welded to the new pipe, and a Super
Trapp can. Works really good, but there's one major problem. If the bike
falls down on the right side, it breaks off one of the studs that the
flange gets fastened to. It's happened twice, and I'm getting tired of
messing with a drill and E-Z out. Would three or four springs on tabs
welded onto the pipe hold it securely enough for normal operation, yet
allow the exhaust to "break away" if the bike falls over?

Some of the two-stroke racing bikes like the MZ used to have an
arrangement like that, IIRC. I think I also saw it on some scrambling
bikes.
