FOAK: Kawie Carburetor Idle Adjustment

The bike is an '82 KZ550 and I am learning that rehabbing is an
automotive engineering tour de force. Everything that can be aged,
rusted, leaky, or otherwise degraded has been.

I am now putting the carbs back on and the manual explains the idle
circuit. It also warns me that the EPA will put me into prison if I
alter certain settings.

I am looking at the idle screws, they adjust the amount of air that
goes into the idle mixture, If I turn the screw to the right then the
needle valve closes, less air and more fuel enter the idle circuit and
the engine. Is that correct?

"In" for a richer mixtute and "out" for a leaner mixture. What say ye
O Fount of All Knowledge? Is that the answer or is there more to it.

BTW: as long as the carbs are off anyway, should I open up the chain
tensioner and grease the internals?

Thanks in advance,

Biker Dude

The manual states that the fuel level inside of the float bowls should
be checked with a clear plastic tube on the OUTSIDE of the of the
bowls.

If you wanted to do this with the bank of carbs on the bike and you
had to adjust the float levels on the inside of the bowls then this
sure would create a lot of work.

I think I could come up with a reasonable "flow bench" and check the
levels with the bank of carbs removed from the bike.

(I'm also of the opinion that the next time I buy a bike this old is
that it should be a twin. Howzabout a 650 twin or maybe a V-2 or V-4.
Did the Japs ever make a 750 or bigger inline twin? Anyway.......
that'll be the next bike.)

If you mean 'parallel' twin, then yup, they have. Kawasaki Z750 twin,
Yamaha TX750 (not a great success, either of them, mind), plus a few
modern ones since.

Yabbot, you would *save* a lot of work if the floats *did not need to
be adjusted*.

"Flow bench" refers to air flow through the cylinder head, not fuel
flow to the carbs.

The Yamaha 920 Eurosport was a Virago with encased chain drive so the
chain stays cleaner...

I rode a friend's 920 after he insisted that he could do slides on my
1982 GS1100.

After all, he was very familiar with the road and he'd been able to
slide his 1980 GS1100.

So I jumped on his 920 and just totally ran away from him, arriving at
the end of the 5 miles of twisties a full minute ahead of him.

The 920 inspired immediate confidence.

He said that my GS1100's front tire just didn't feel "planted."

He described his Eurosport as a "Japanese Vincent", not a "Japanese
Harley."

He knew even less than you, then. Horrible thing, with a very short
model run - known as the TR1 here. Utterly crap suspension and the
early Yamaha v-twin exploding starter clutch. Actually, there was the
basis of a nice bike in there and the BT1100 Bulldog shows what it
eventually became, but it was appallingly underdeveloped when it
appeared nearly 30 years ago.
