My InsCo have finally made an offer on my beloved CR-V. £1500. So I'm
looking to replace it with something around the same price.

Two candidates are:

Renault Scenic 2.0 RXE.

Honda Civic 1.6 Auto.

Appart from 'it's French' (in one case) what opinions/experience does the
FOAK have on these two models? Anything to look out for?

tia

Derek.

Is that an auto? - if so, run away quickly.

If it's not, it may be worth considering.

Probably the better option.

No manual. My last three have all been auto and I prefer them. I was very
impressed with the amount of 'dog-room' behind the rear seats. As it
happens we had two Clios (from new) in the nineties and were invited to
the Scenic launch by the dealer. Each of the Clios had needed more work
(some under guarantee) than the CR-V which in eight years only had brake-
pads and tyres outside the normal service regime. If there's enough room
for the dogs in the Civic I'll probably go with that.

SWMBO had a an auto Megane 1.6. Actually it was not a bad car at all,
unfortunately the starter motor chewed up a section of the fly wheel
which grew and grew. Unfortunately the day it stopped with the dead
section of the flywheel aligned with the starter dog happened to be when
I was out in it.

£1100 quid later we decided to px it for a Mazda 3.

Other than that it was a very nice motah.

I had a 1977 Hondamatic Civic back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, a
bloody cracking little car that was, except it was water soluble

If it had been a manual, you could have just put it in gear, taken the
handbrake off and give it some sheep-shaging motion from the drivers' seat.

This turns the engine enough to find some teeth on the starter ring and
you're away...

We've got the Megane hatchback and the Scenic is more or less the same
animal. Look out for collapsing heater matrices. Ours is only letting a
trickle of hot air out and no matter what I do to it seems unlikely to
unblock. IIRC to change the clutch you have to haul the engine and gearbox
out unless you're lucky and have one particular engine.
