My old Saab is going in the local paper this weekend if anyone wants one
of the last of the 900s [1] here's your chance.

SAAB 900 SE, 1993, 3dr hatchback, classic shape, racing green, service
history, MOT 05/05, Tax 01/05, factory alloys, aircon, CD, sunroof,
towbar, new exhaust, classic insurance, £995

Some fairly uninspiring pictures - if you're interested come and have a
proper look. Except for the bubbling paint on the rear wheel arch it's
pretty clean.

My dad had one of those, an EMS model in metallic burgundy.

Very nice it was too. Apparently the valves are sodium cooled, whatever
that means.

Like Alfa valves. The stem is hollow and (partially?) filled with sodium
to aid heat dissipation.

995, ah

It's an old aircraft engine trick. The valves are hollow to take the
heat off the exhaust valve face up into the stem where the relatively
cooler oil is circulating over it.

Quite entertaining when they break apparently, as the sodium makes a
nice bang when it's let loose inside a hot engine.

Cheers,

Paul.

My Mum used to have one of those and my Dad had the dubious honour of
teaching me to drive in it.

Oooh, good point. But it would it be more or less than the calories in the
petrol? <g>
