I read somewhere that Chilean wine producers are concerned that importers
will give them a wide berth, imagining logistical problems. Their message
is very much "open for business". They have a harvest to get in and
desperately need to shift stock to pay the grape pickers & processors which
will go a long way to helping their recovery.

I got an email from Laithwaites to that effect, also saying they'd throw
a fiver or so from each order to the charity effort.

Perhaps it was that, marketing *******s, rather than a serious news report.

BTW, is it my imagination or has Laithwaites got a bit dear lately? They
don't seem to be selling passable bottles of claret for sensible money
nowadays. £/euro, to blame they'll claim I guess.

Just get Bonwick to rephrase it in a more attractive way. Shouldn't be
that hard, it's in a vineyard isn't it ?

Trouble is, according to my sources, the temporary male labourers they
rely on have all gone home to check on or repair things, and the women
have ditto because they're worried about their kids.

And right now there's also more money being offered to shift bits of
broken countryside.

Factories are working at about 70% of capacity - not bad. Some stocks
were lost. The long power cuts didn't do the coldstores many favours
either. So they've taken a huge hit but, as you imply, it's not a fatal
one.

As this Casillero del Diablo Malbec 2008 is quite nice, I'll try to
help by buying up some more.

You've just gotta go ahead and change the captain of your brainship,
because he's drunk at the wheel.

that's not a bad range of wines, considering the price. I like their
gewurztraminer.

Been round the winery :-)) My favourite's the Carmenere. Oh, and the
Trio's good too. There's an extraordinary 'ashy' taste about the
Carmenere. Sounds horrible, but it;s actually gorgeous.

We tried an Argentinian gewurztraminer in a rather nice restaurant in
Bariloche last year. The owner/waitress did warn us that it wouldn't
be like the Alsace ones we're used to, and she wasn't wrong. Quite
pleasant, but so different it was difficult to believe it was the same
grape variety.

So what was the Chilean stuff like?

Terroir, dear boy, terroir.

It's a while since I have drunk Alsacien gewurz, as they are bloody dear
over here. The CdD one is very aromatic, reminds me of elderflowers. Never
lasts long once open. Quite refreshing and gets you ****ed quite rapidly as
it is 13%ABV IIRC.
