OK, so the starter motor is playing up.

Making a lovely grinding / squealing sound when you crank it.

It will fire up, but it sounds *horrible*.

Googling suggests I need to get to the starter and look at the planetary
gears... easy enough, looking at the pictures.

What I can't work out is how to remove the starter cover.

The BoL is no use, and I can't find much on Google.

I blame Lozzo for buying a BMW. It all went wrong from that day onwards.

It is very easy to get to and easy to remove and service.

It isn't exactly a new bike FFS. Try getting in and doing something serious
to a VFR engine.

One of these?

FFS there's a couple of allen bolts holding it down on either side.
Undo these and lift it off.

Eh?

Take tank off, undo the few bolts holding down the cover, then swear a
little while trying to wiggle out the starter motor.

I have a strong suspicion the starter is also a generic car part. Or at
least bits of it are.

Haven't tried yet - but it looked far too tight under the frame rail to
remove anything like that.
