Not sure if this is common knowledge here and/or already considered
useless[1] information; came across this website listing part numbers
for various Hondas:
<http://tinyurl.com/honda321parts>

[1] I was trying to find a part number for the CB250/400 Superdream
Reg.Rect.[2], but could not find those bikes listed.
[2] which is said to work in the 750SS

That's quite handy. Mind you, cmsnl.com has fiches for all four Japanese
makes.

Try the CB350S and the CB450 - same engines, basically.

Here you go:-

Try Googling before asking a damn silly question.

Thanks. From which I can conclude that there seems to be quite a few
pattern reg-recs offered as "Honda CB250/400" ones . . .

Um, no, it isn't.

Ah bummer, I'm wrong again :-)

reason I assumed it was American market bikes only was the lack of
VFR750s between 87 & 89 which was, IIRC, the years that the seppos got
VFR700s...

Thinks: ah, I phrased my initial post badly - cmsnl is by no means just
US Honda models but the first site posted seemed to be US only. I
should've snipped your suggestion of cmsnl.

Ignore me, I'm not firing on all cylinders this week

Yes, but will a Chinese-made pattern reg/rect that happens to work when
connected to a CB250 be an as good and long lasting "pattern" substitute
for my 750?

Without detailed knowledge of reg/rects, I simply follow general
Ducatisti advice stating that the Honda CB250/400 Superdream ones seem
to do nicely on the SS. I've not seen anywhere that "any" reg/rect that
can keep a CB250 charging also is a good pattern unit for the SS.

Of course. Nothing wrong with a CB250/400 reg/rect whatsoever, and
I did not say that there was, nor did I try to dissuade you from
using one.

If you would be so kind as to re-read what I wrote, nowhere did I
say or even imply that a cheap reg/rect will be as good as a high
quality one. All I said was that if the unit is of the proper
type, it will interchange. Not really the same thing at all.

So to restate, by all means, buy a high quality reg/rect from whatever
source tickles your fancy, but be aware that Superdream reg/rects are
nothing special, that is, they aren't any more of a "universal donor"
type than a compatible reg/rect from another marque.

The point I was trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to make was that you
have more choices available. Not that just any old cheapy chinese
piece of crap reg/rect would be as good as a high quality unit- but
that many more units are compatible than you might think.

Any clearer now?
