I'm not sure I've seen that before.

A cop, standing on the hard shoulder of the M4 (Just before jn 13,
westbound), pointing a hand held (laser?) speed detector at us. I hope
he missed me. Even if he did tag anyone, not sure how they'd follow that up?

I have seen em loads with them, usually in the car hanging out the window. I
think they have to stop you to do anything, as it doesnt take pics etc.

Unless theres a new type etc.

A marvellous invention called radio to communicate with the colleague in/on
the pursuit vehicle. The French use this method, especially near St Quentin
on the A26. One laser rifle on a tripod, fleet of motorcycles chasing down
speeders in the Aire d'Urvillers.

A bit trickier to pull off if there's an exit handy though. Requires
more backup.

On a similar note, there seemed to be a lot of plod activity on the M1
between the M25 and Luton today, I noticed two marked cars parked on
the hard shoulder and two other cars being stopped and talked at by
the occupants of two un marked cars. I guessed that the two parkes
were clocking passing cars with ANPR and the others were tugging them.

Yersh. I realised it was a good thing I had renewed my insurance (at
lunchtime) that expired today. Whoops.
