Attention Texas Motorcyclists

03/24/2009 Action Alert - Lane Splitting Bill Passes Committee
Vote More Info

Senate Bill 506, sponsored by Senator John Carona (R-Dallas),
would permit a motorcycle operator and any passenger who wear protective
headgear to ride for a safe distance between lanes of traffic moving in the
same direction during periods of traffic congestion under the following
conditions:

(A) at a speed not more than five miles per hour greater
than the speed of the other traffic;

(B) in traffic that is moving at a speed of 20 miles per
hour or less; and

(C) in a location other than a school crossing zone or a
location where the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less.

SB-506 was reported favorably out of the Senate Committee on
Transportation and Homeland Security on March 20 by a 7-2 vote.

California motorcyclists have been lane splitting for many
years; according to the California Highway Patrol website, "Lane splitting
by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent
manner."

Now is the time to contact your state senator to let him or her
know your position on lane splitting and SB-506. Click here to obtain
contact information for your senator.

I have already called my Senators office requesting his support for this. I
am awaiting an answer today. Does anyone else care about this bill?

I'm just amazed they put this much 'thought' into it. It got shunted to
LEO's (TX DPS?) for comment last session.

But they'll spend much less time on how to shell out a couple hundred
million $$'s for another poodle grooming school.

Guess I shouldn't complain. We're the best voters their contributed
money can buy!
