I had about 8 months worth of sick leave accrued when my employer
scrapped the old system and gave everyone unlimited sick leave.

I thought you were about to say "scrapped the old system and gave
everyone only 15 days of sick leave per year non cumulative, and then
I fell very ill and had to take 8 months off work.". Because that's
how the universe usually works.
