Hi Gordon,
Sounds terrible - I can only imagine life without a bike. It would be so
empty.
I think you have to subtly make the connection that you + bike = complete
happiness and peace which then you will want to share with her, being such
an important part of your life... which can only = her long term happiness.
Perhaps you should explore the reasons she has against the owning of a bike
and find strategies to calm her fears or justify the expense. Luckily Lisa
worked it out quickly that riding had become very important to me in many
ways and so I managed to (only just) justify the cost of the ZZR600. We
weren't expecting the gear to be so pricey but she has a great degree of
comfort in wearing good gear and really enjoys the time we spend on the
bike - whether it's at low speed along River Road to Wisemans or at a
naughty pace beyond Timbuktoo. It's taken some time to get to this though.
Certainly riding = happy Davey = better life for Lisa! You just have to
have a few $$ spare for the argument that "that bloody bike is all yours and
cost $XXX. What do I get??"...
If she isn't an experienced pillion, make sure you take it easy with her and
don't push her boundaries too quickly. Lisa wasn't comfortable with more
than a few kms in the first week or 2 but soon was OK on trips to Nowra
(from Sydney) and now weeks away on the bike. Gently gently catch ye
monkey. No big throttle openings, unless she's a speed freak (like my crazy
sister!).
So the approach should be something subtle, introducing your heartfelt need
to return to bikes (misty eyes are good here) - you only live once and want
the best possible life together... this can only be enhanced with a bike...
etc. and how you want to share the great freedom and joy of it all with her.
Perhaps she'll side with you and see how you being happy can only benefit
her.
Of course you could just go out and buy one.
Good luck and let me know how you go.
Cheers,
