Black was never a factory colour for RD400s

Wasn't it a factory colour on the 250s, though?

Bad form etc

Black was a factory colour for the 250/350LC 4L0 and 4L1, but quite rare
even back then. Most of them werew white/blue, with a few less white/red
ones about.

I don't ever recall seeing or hearing of a factory black aircooled RD250
or 400.

Hmmm. Just bought a German mag when on holiday in Switzerland and they
had a black RD250 (non-LC) in there. Looked original to me - maybe
they had different colours on the continent. But it did look soooo
right.

You may be right, but as I gave all my parts books away when I sold all
my RD stuff, I can't look it up. This is going to sound really sad, but
I read those parts books from cover to cover just looking for
differences between our market and others. That was done mainly to
ensure that any parts I bought on the net were for UK market bikes, and
I can't recall seeing black offered as an option.

Germany got a grabrail, it looks a bit like an XS750 one and bolts
through the back of the seat. If you can find one of those in good nick
then you're on a winner.

Useful for towing broken down X7s home.

They all do that, Sir. And then they go bang... ;-)

T'was me.

I had a little play with it, without any joy, then lost interest.

I don't think it had been set up very well for the pipes that were on it,
and on a two stroke, this invariably leads to an even more premature death
than normal.

Was last seen being loaded into a van by a man with a thing for TDR250s.
