I don't really ever want to get that attached to (or that 'dependent'
on for that matter) any piece of technology.

Would you really be lost ? it's only a gadget ..

I have had both I definitely prefer the iPhone.

3GS vs HTC Desire. thinking of going back to the iPhone and selling
the desire.

I would certainly miss it for a while, all the jolly things it can do
like mapping, recognising tunes, finding lyrics, letting me know when a
new exoplanet is discovered, weather reports, Facebook, Twitter,
Internet Radio stations, checking my game character status....
But in the end yes, it's just a gadget for the impatient. My Dad always
gasps in horror at my £45 p/m O2 bill. So is there a really cheapie
cheap O2 option for just an ordinary phone for text and calls?
