Help please. Just got back from Sri Lanka and when downloading my
photos my bloody computer/card reader screwed up the memory card. It
gave me a message that the card was now unformatted, it invited me to
reformat which obviously I did not do. I have run an old copy of
Greenstreet media recover over it and managed to find some even
earlier shots but none of the Sri Lanka trip. Unless the FOAK can
advise better I intend to take the card to a computer repair type
place to see if they have more powerful facilities. Does anyone have
any further recommendations?

Rome - will be going there for the first time in April, will be there
for 4 days. Accommodation already booked, but any advice on what to do
and how to do it, where to eat, or what to avoid would be gratefully
received.

TIA

Brian

Fake taxi drivers at the airport.[1]

Scammers trying to get you to go to "American Bar"[2] or equivalent
where they charge you a fortune[3] for very little alcohol.

[2] aka "clip joint" IIRC

Not really limited to Rome though ...

Ditto !

Watch out for pickpockets around Termini (Main railway station). Make
time for Porta Portese on an Sunday morning (big Sunday market)

Make sure you go to all the sights, i'd start at Colosseo, then head
up the Fori Imperiali, then Via del Corso, detouring to go to the
Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps, then double back, doing the rest
of the Via del Corso and head right to do the Pantheon and Piazza
Navona.

Don't eat near the Pantheon, unless you want to take out a second
Mortgage, and make sure you don't leave without trying

The Ice Cream
Porchetta,
Grappa
Limoncello.
Proscuitto
Bresaola

Not necessarily at the same time !

And of course Pasta, any kind really, wine, olive oil etc etc ..

Paul.

Agree, but IME Rome is by far the worst of any place I've been for both.
Not only did I get scammed there, I warned my colleagues about it, who
some years later had exactly the same happen to them.

I've only been the once but loved it. Somehow I avoided the scams that
seem to have afflicted others. All the predictable sights like the Trevi
Fountain, Coliseum, Castel Sant Angelo, Vatican / Vatican Museum,
Spanish Steps are worth seeing. The thing that amazed me was that the
place is just dripping with history - everywhere you turn you will find
something ancient or historic vying for your attention. Don't me
surprised if you find your jaw dropped on more than one occasion.

The food was great as was the ice cream / gelato. I just went to some of
the decent recommendations from either a Rough Guide or Time Out Guide.
I ended up eating brain - as offal is a roman speciality. I did know
beforehand so no deception from the restaurant. The waiter did wonder if
I knew what I was ordering. I found one place that did a very basic
spread of starter, soup, main, desert, water and wine (a bottle each)
for an all in price. Just lovely.

I do like the Italians - mad, stylish, egocentric, emotional but somehow
the place works and you can't help but fall in love with it.

The usual rules about being a tourist in a major city apply - watch your
money and passport, don't look too "lost", be careful around the big
stations and tourist hot spots. While you can walk between the sites
the buses are cheap and very frequent. However all tickets are bought
"off system" from kiosks / tobacconists. Do not be surprised to find
crush load conditions all day long - due to the ancient nature of Rome
the Metro lines do not currently serve the tourist heart of the city so
buses try (!) to take the strain.

If you travel in from the airport by train to Termini station be aware
that the airport shuttle platforms are (or they were for me) bloody
miles from the main station building. On your return journey do not
leave yourself with 2 minutes to get from ticket hall to train - you
will miss your train. From memory you also had to reserve a place for
the return train even though they sell you a return ticket at the
airport!

Oh and Griff Rhys Jones recently did one of his "greatest cities in the
world" from Rome.

http://www.itv.com/lifestyle/peoplea...reatestcities/

It would seem someone has kindly stuck it on You Tube if you do a
Google.

Main thing, watch out for pick-pockets, the place is full of 'em. Oh, &
Colosseum tickets also get you into the place next door (The Paletine
or something like that - where the rich bods lived - can't remember the
name). But more importantly, Paletine tickets also get you into the
Colosseum. One of those places has huge queues (three guesses which),
the other has no queues at all.

Do the obvious things: Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and such, but in
the Vatican Museum just run to the Raphael apartments and the Sistine
Chapel: the rest is crap. If you want some culcha, your best bet is
the Villa Borghese: a nice sized gallery of Bernini sculptures, just
big enough to feel you've had a good deal, but small enough that you
can walk around it without being overloaded by crap.

Eating: my favorite pizzeria is Ai Marmi on Via Trastevere, or Da
Baffetto near Piazza Navona. Otherwise, most places are decent if you
sstay away from teh very touristy places. Try Testaccio, across the
river from Trastevere, and, especially, thte old Jewish ghetto around
Portico di Ottavia.

I was an idiot and deleted the email you sent me cos I saw it before
reading your message above. However I found the programme ont web and
had much success. Many, many, thanks; got 592 photos back, lost the
video clips which is a shame but got the precious little piccies.
