Requirements:

1 Static ip address (for mail server to send emails to AOL who have
stopped accepting messages from servers at dynamic ip addresses. Sons
of bachelors they are.)

2 Reasonable upload speed (512k ish or higher)

3 Reasonable download speed (tbh I was quite happy at 2Mb, but
obviously quicker is probably better for working from home...)

4 An ISP I can actually talk to rather than having to contact via a
web site feedback form' that generates an automatic email to me saying
'we have received your feedback' and then nothing else.

Curently using cable with blueyonder, who refuse categorically to give
me a static ip addres unless I 'upgrade' to being a business customer,
whereupon they'll charge me £300 for installing a new cable modem and
router, then £70 per month for 4Mb download speed. <expletive deleted>

Are there other cable people or will I have to go to ADSL? (SDSL is
probably not worth it.)

I've heard good things about zen, but they are hugely more expensive
than most of the other ISPs seem to be.

Any suggestions (other than 'don't be a pikey') gratefully received.

Ta.

F9 do what it says on the packet.

You won't get that with any of them unless you pay a premium. Labour is
expensive.

Have a look at F9, but check out their customer feedback forum first
(there's a test-drive ID for guests)- they've introduced a new
'Sustainable User Policy' which they are doing their best not to tell
anyone about unless they exceed the download limits. Provided you think
you will be OK with these limits, F9 will probably fit the bill.

Freeola are another possibility, I'm trying them out at the moment, but
it's too early to say whether their broadband service is reliable or not.

Wot he said. I am convinced that >99% of my drops are due to either the

Demon. Not the cheapest, not the fastest, but they do a full,
unlimited, unblocked, static IP service ... and it just works [full
stop].

Only minor niggle is the call centre is in India.
Downtime (AFAIAA) in past 7 years is circa 5 minutes.

That may be a hard one as that is teh one that costs them, and with DSL
there is a limit due to design

Telewest now do upto 10Mbs

Mailbox are pretty good for (4) - but if you want higher upload speeds,
you're going to have to go for LLU

MUAHAHAHAHAH

If you know how close to the exchange you are, it might be worth waiting for
ADSL2+ in which case you might well be looking at upstream speeds of 1MBit/s.
I'm on Bulldog, which rocks[1] so far, and has 400K upstream. I get about
7.2MBit/s down, 600m from the exchange.

Added services like mail and web space are a bit poor, but it doesn't sound
like you'd be using them anyway.

I've just signed up with www.madasafish.com for 2mb but I've only been
with them for a week so cant really give a long standing opinion

Static IP's provided free however upload is 256k, download 2mb and
bandwidth 5gb per month. Cost 14.99/month for 6 months then 17.99 after
with a free modem. I *think* additional bandwidth is £2 per gig but
they do other tariff's too.

Cant comment on customer services as I havent called them, however they
delivered the modem after a few days and the service was up when they
said it would be.

Dont know about running a mail server as some ISP's run port blocking -
might be worth looking into before you commit for 12 months.

Cheers

Excellent stuff and while you are in the mood for 'just doing things'
why don't you pop off and have a read of the ukrm cbt. Details of how
to finds it all over google. When you read it please pay particular
attention to the bit regarding posting styles and common ****ing good
manners.

Agreed. I have used Demon since (counts on fingers) 1994 ish. Since
switching over to DSL broadband with them I have had 2 outages in 5
years - both scheduled, both lasting what they said they would last.

Are you sure? I spoke to tech support t'other day (line upgrade) and it
was most definately a Norf Lahndan accent..

Indeed.
