Many moons ago I recall we were trying to identify were we'd seen a
clip of a Liberator losing a wing to a stick of bombs from above.

It was from World at War, Ep23 "Pacific".

I suspect that wouldn't really have made much difference to the overall
outcome of the situation.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Salad Dodger
<(E-Mail Removed)> saying something like:

Istr mention of pilots complaining about some crazy formations they were
told to fly in, almost guaranteeing an incident like the above, when one
of the uppermost planes drifted out of place.

I thought that at first, then reasoned that at least the crew would have
had *some* chance of escape, though those who didn't would have a minute
or so of torment.

Also, the aircraft exploding wouldn't have done any favours to others
nearby.

Given the G forces involved, I very much doubt it unless the fuselage
broke up.
