You, Sir, are a ****ing genius.

One 10 quid VW Golf ignition box later.... and I have a working SOBoxer.

Although the new gel battery may also have helped ;-)

Next problem is that I fecked with the idle screws to get it home - I
assume I'll now need to buy carb balancing kit in order to re-set
things?

Interesting. So the coil pack is ok? Gee that's unlucky I never replaced one
of those. I better get a spare in, you Jonah!

You don't need anything to balance those carbs? They are CV's and balance
themselves mostly. You balance the pick up off idle by pressing gently on
the cables and adjusting the cable at the carb, having set the mixture/idle
speed on each side. The pick up being exactly matched is what makes them run
sweetly around town.

First set the mixture screws as per the manual, assuming the float heights
are right and all in good nick. Pull each plug lead in turn and set the idle
as low as poss each side and both same. Fine tune by ear.

I do have a gunson box that clips on the lead and gives a nice accurate rev
reading. Alternatively use a Morgan and balance idle by vacuum. But I always
finish it by ear and exhaust pressure.

Well, it appears to be OK.

Still got the spare coming anyway - worth keeping one in reserve, just
in case, especially at the price I paid vs price of a new one.

Ahhh, OK.

I will do the idle at the weekend, once it has had a run.

I've adjusted stuff so it idles at just under 1k rpm at the moment, and
it seems to pick up OK.

Exhausts are another thing. They're offensively loud since the baffles
self-destructed.

You have two choices. Set the idle so the charge light is off or just
flickers or set it to be on.

If it is cold set it low to be on. If hot set it just high enough to be
right off. That way it won't stall when cold/rev up when hot

That would also cause it to run a bit lean.

I've tried to remove the black box from the heat sink, but it won't come
off.

Unfortunately, the heatsink isn't the right shape to bolt back into the
original position, either.

Not really sure what the solution to this is at the moment - I've just
zip-tied it to the bike whilst I work that one out.

I don't know if that's true or not but I usually do. Then again, not always.

Ah right perhaps they've used something different as the black box I got
didn't come with a heat sink
