Does anybody have one of those car tyre pumps that run off the
cigarette lighter? Are they any good?

I'm thinking of buying one. What are your experiences with them?

I presume I can set a cut-off pressure like 37psi before switching it
on... otherwise if I walk off and leave it running will there be an
explosion (tyre) and/or fire (compressor) and/or drained battery (car).

Mine works fine for me.

<blank look> Mine just pumps more and more air in until I tell it to stop.

It does have a gauge, which isn't very great, but it does pump up tyres.

I don't wander off when I am checking and pumping tyres.

I know, I am a very simple type person.

Maybe you need to be a bit more committed to your tyre pumping, and just
hang around until it completes. A small pump is going to get very hot
pumping up a tyre, and the physicists in this group will probably
explain to you why the pump has to try harder and harder to pump as the
tyre pressure increases, and why this will cause the pump to run hotter
and hotter while it's pumping up the tyre.

My bet is that the pump will overheat and **** itself before the tyre
explodes or the battery drains, and rather than catching fire, the
little compressor engine will just cease up.

If you buy one of the small $20 supercheap auto type compressors, you'll
do yourself a favour to pull it apart and reassemble it with loctite.

The real enemy of these is heat, so when I'm using mine, i run it for a
minute, then turn it off and let it cool for a minute, reducing the
running time and increasing the cooling time progressively as the tyre
pressure gets higher.

Yes. They are slow, but they do the job.

Mine specifically recommends against running it for more than about 10
minutes. It gets very hot after a few minutes, and it takes much more
than that to pump a car tyre from close-to-empty to 30psi.

I had a $20'ish one.
It was easy to remove the outer plastic cover. This made it small enough to
be stored under the seat on the Vstrom.

I only used it once to pump up a push bike tyre.

You get what you pay for. cheap ones will **** themselves.

I spent a little more ($50.00?) on one from super cheap, works fine, and
pumps a motorcycle tyre from flat in not very much time.

cheers,

I have a cheap one from SuperCheap. I removed all the plastic from it
so it fits in the storage space under the bike seat.

If your tyre is flat where they hell are you wandering off to?

I imagine there might be really expensive ones that do that, but I've
never seen one. Carry a book and read it while waiting.

The tyre slime brand jobbies (tire slime maybe, it's american) get a
pretty good writeup on a few forums I am on. No personal experience
with them.
