Observant Jews are not allowed to do any work on Saturday, travel

animal or harvest any crop.

Observant Jews are supposed to walk to temple, since they might
accidentally break a branch, which could be construed as harvesting a
crop if riding on an animal's back or on a motorcycle.

Observant Jews won't play golf on Saturday for the same reason.

I had a long discussion with a Jew on another forum about why he chose

He had picked it up from John Goodman's obnoxious character Walter
Sobchak in "The Big Lebowski."

Walter Sobchak was aggressively trying to get back to his Jewish roots
and insisted that "I don't roll on shabbos."

As everyone knows, the entertainment industry is dominated by Jews who
want to inflict their ethics upon their Gentile audience, but when the
actions of one character need such extensive explanation, the Jewish
screen writers have gone too far...

Back when the Torah and the Talmud were written, urban Jews were
living inside walled cities and couldn't go outside the walls on their
sabbath.

Modern Jews sequestered in surburban ghettos (by their own choice!)
have erected
poles connected by wires to delineate the boundaries of their
communities so they can get around the prohibition against travelling.

Much of the Talmud involves finding ways to get around the 613
negative commandments of the Torah...

It was a joke. He had converted to Judaism because he married a Jewish
woman, and then he got divorced. He didn't have Jewish roots and was
very obviously not ethnically Jewish; that was what was supposed to be
funny.
