Be a part of a Special Tribute to Motorcycling Legend, Barry Sheene
The AGPC in conjunction with Network Ten will conduct a “Ride to the GP - A
Tribute to Barry Sheene” with the primary purpose of creating a tribute to the
late Barry Sheene, a dual 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix World Champion,
Corporation Board Member and Channel 10 motorsport personality.
Riders shall be encouraged to meet at Bairnsdale on the Wednesday evening prior
to the Event for “A Tribute Evening to Barry Sheene” at the local RSL before
commencing the ride on the Thursday morning.
Riders will be flagged off from Bairnsdale under police escort and are expected
to arrive at the Circuit sometime late in the afternoon. The riders shall then
complete a controlled lap of the track and the ride shall culminate in a brief
presentation to be made in the Marshall's muster tent.

THE DINNER
Riders from around the country will be encouraged to descend on Bairnsdale for a
function in the RSL on Wednesday 15 October 2003 titled A Tribute Evening to
Barry Sheene.
The format of the evening shall consist of the following:
Informal dining in the RSL bistro prior to the commencement of the evenings
formalities Celebrity Panel interview (Daryl Beatie, Russell Ingall, Steve
Richards, and others) Celebrity autographs Prizes and giveaways Sporting
memorabilia auction with proceeds to CanTeen
REGESTRATION & BAIRNSDALE FLAG OFF
On the Thursday morning (16 October) a registration system will take place at
Bairnsdale Football oval. This will be accompanied by a late breakfast BBQ
conducted by a local sporting or community group prior to the flag off.
The registration process will consist of riders having their bike visually
checked for good working condition and they shall then receive a sticker on
their bike and a registration form which they mush read, complete and submit
prior to receiving a wristband.
IT IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL RIDERS TO REGISTER. RIDERS WHO DO NOT REGISTER AND
DON’T HAVE A BIKE STICKER AND WRISTBAND WILL NOT BE GRANTED ACCESS TO THE
CIRCUIT FOR A CONTROLLED LAP OF THE TRACK.
At approximately 10:30am the ride shall be flagged off by a notable celebrity
and shall proceed under police escort through the central business district of
Bairnsdale and onto the Princess highway.
ROUTE AND TRAFFIC CONTROL
The police escort shall consist of a lead car, a tail car and two (2) solo
motorcycles roving within the group of riders. The route can be summarized as
follows:
10:30hrs to 12:30hrs Bairnsdale – Morewell (Princess Highway)
12:30hrs to 13:200hrs Stopever in Morewell – Fuel / Refreshment break
13:20hrs to 13:30hrs Regroup at Kernot Hall, Morewell
13:30hrs to 15:30hrs Morewell – San Remo (Strzelecki Highway via Leongatha)
15:30hrs to 16:15hrs Stopover in San Remo and regroup
16:15hrs to 16:30hrs San Remo to Circuit (Gap Rd South – Gate 3A)
The total trip distance is just less than 300km.
PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT
Once at the circuit registered riders shall be directed through controlled
checkpoints at Gate 3A. They will then to do a controlled slow lap of the track
under course car and police escorts.
The riders will exit the track at turn 4 and be directed to park their bikes
before proceeding to a short function in the Marshal’s muster tent. This
function will be conducted as a formal tribute to Barry Sheene, with video
footage of his performances and prominent guests invited to make speeches
celebrating Barry’s contribution to the sport of grand prix motorcycle racing.
After a 15-20 min presentation including light refreshments riders will be
directed out of the circuit via gate 7 and this shall be the completion of the
Ride.
