Got this message from a bloke on the 4b forum... someone maybe
interested

A mate has a 1980 something model RZ500 4 cyl 2 stroke road bike, well
he has 2 of them.
One has had a R1 front and back end grafted onto it so it handles a
bit better, the other one is nearly all there original.

Both bikes are in bits right now due to one crank ceasing.

What should he do with them? Is there a market for them or should he
sell as parts on fleabay?

He wants $2k for all of it together, I told him to hold off until I
know a little more as they may be worth more in parts.

If one is complete and ready to go and one is a parts bike sell them
separately with those descriptions. If both are knackered it's hard
to say but probably sell them both separately. Mention the other one
in the ad description.

Sell them on ebay, with pics of the stock parts that get crashed
to show they aren't broken, a full description saying exactly what's
wrong and what's missing, and set no or low starting bid. Be sure
to add all relevant details like when last registered and be sure
to answer any questions quickly.

Could do 'em on bikesales.com.au too.

It's too narrow a market to know what you'd get as whole vs bits, but
generally people who have a niche bike are interested either in all of
a parts bike or only a very few bits, and you'd end up with chunks of
it no one wants. So sell in very big pieces.

Yea that was my suggestion. Even the USA RD/RZ forum want to buy
anything they can

I think the R1 bodged unit will be worthless, but the other may have
some value, depending on condition of the whole thing..

There is that, but you'd be surprised who checks ebay these days...

I think anyone who is after a rare bike has an ebay alert up if they
have any sense at all.

After all, Oz is a small market so most of the time you have to get
stuff internationally and ebay is one of the best ways to do that.

Maybe I'm strange but I get most of my rare spares from ebay these
days for all 4 old bikes.

Its probably the easiest way to find things. Trading post is history
these days.
I used to buy it every week for years. It went online, I still bought
it occasionally, the online site was hideous to use..
Then they scrapped the paper one, and "FIXED" the online one, I havent
looked at it in 12 mths.

Someone interested in a bit of history might be keen on them, I wouldn't
give you a pinch of cocky **** for the modified one but to build up an
original unit could be worthwhile.

Funny really... the special appeals to me more.

Although the hassle with specials is saying someone else did all the
work.

With the Yam I've made enough changes to feel it's mine, I'd have to
see if the modded RZ would have enough work needing doing to make it
something to own.

Stock is good but for a play bike a special has more potential.

(Not that I want an RZ500! Especially not one that is in bits.)

THe older a stock bike gets, the more pressure there is to keep it
original and the more difficult it is to use it as intended for fear
of breaking some unobtainable part.
