Got to go through rider training and get a 250 again (let my license lapse
years ago) and I'm looking at buying one of these. Any opinions or things
to watch out for?

Thanks
J

The short fuel range seems to be the only thing people consistently complain
about... The "glovebox" where the fuel normally goes might be a cute idea, but
its come at some expense to maximum range - its down on the order of 180km or so
per tank... Not so good for back country touring - not so much of a problem for
shopping boulevard posing...

I'm surprised at how well those tiny little 4 cylinder 250s last - theres lots
of tiny little valves and valvesprings there, and these skinny little cams to
bounce em up and down, but you don't hear horror stories of them falling apart
on people, so I guess they've got 'em to last OK - and the Across is probably
the least stressed of the 4 cylinder 250s (if you can call a 16,000rpm redline
"unstressed"!)

You'll get the usual advice of learning on something with less fairings to
reduce the costs of the almost inevitable learner drops, but keep in mind that
any other people go against that (good, in my opinion) advice, and cope just
fine.

slow as a slug, poor fuel range, all show and no go.

I sold my accross and bought a Yamaha FZR250 and it was another world. The
FZR would have to be about the fastest 250 I have ridden.

Still, that boot is damn handy.

The "slowest 250" isn't much slower than the "fastest 250" and even that is
slow.

Don't discount looking at greater than 250's. There are some good bikes above this capacity too, if your state allows it.

ie. NSW - Learner Approved Motorcycles.

Exactly. But you don't truly realise it until you ride something bigger.
And then a 250 is just a 250.

Find a TZR(reverse barrel), RGV, NSR, KR1S, Aprilia, CBR250RRRRRRRRRR,
etc.. theres quicker, lighter and better.

drop mine...had it fixed...got over it

mines up for sale in Melb

here are the details

'97 Across Black and Purple
49,000 on the clock, dont let that worry you, it doesnt burn a drop of
oil and runs very sweet, shims checked 5000km ago and might need 2 in
the next 10,000km (extra $150 on top of a service??)
its alway run a fully Synthetic oil and serviced every 6000km

new front fork seals 3 months back

5000km old Sprockets and DID Xring Gold chain , lubed every
500km..sometimes less kms
(spare 14T front spocket and like new rear spocket)

15,000km old rear disc, but with most of the riding I do is touring so
it's near new

new paint except bottom fairing, which is in good condition

extras
Braided front brake line
Sigma BC800 bike computer with LED light
tinted screen

I going to ask $3500 for it with RWC

but I will let it go now for $3000 firm
but the following will be needed to be done
organize RWC
new front tyre (maybe)
several of the stickers on the fairings
new globe in speedo
maybe...and I mean *maybe* new disc pads

everyone..pass this info on If you like,
bike as is avalible *now*($3000) RWC in a couple of weeks ($3500)
