Pootled around Derby this afternoon on nice shiny demo bike, and it
was, errrr, 'different'. Although admittedly it was the first time on
a v-twin, can any of you offer guidance on the following niggling
query:

Do you get used to riding a bike that sounds like a tractor?

hint: It doesn't sound like a tractor when you're giving it enough
beans ...

Haven't the faintest- mine doesn't, & it's got the stock end can.
I think it sounds lovely.

Were you lugging it? The SV650 engine loves to rev.

But your stomach does as you watch your missus [who has dropped 4 out
of the 5 bikes she has ridden] wobble off, leaving you with a bit of
paper that says you are paying the first £500 of any damage........

....or a tractor that sounds like a bike?

One of my bikes virtually *is* a tractor.

This was my only criticism of the old SV650, otherwise a top bike that
loves to rev.

V-Twins sound different to 4 Cylinder bikes, some like it some don't,
end of story.

I love the sound of the Ducati 999 (as heard at Silverstone WSB), I also
liked the sound of the 748 that joins me part way through my commute. This
has very nice Termignonis on so i don't know whether the `V-Twin sound` is
the sound of a V-Twin or the sound of a very expensive set of Termignonis.

One thing for sure is I've never heard an SV650 sound anything like as good
as the ducatis I've heard, coupled with the relative lack of power I'd
rather buy a Hornet 600 and make my first V-twin a Ducati.

Huh? Comparing the most like for like in either range an SV650 is
marginally more powerful than a Ducati 750SS!

I never mentioned the 750SS, the 748 makes more, power and torque it costs
more but it sounds better.

This is why is I stated that I'd rather have a Hornet 600 (similar price,
more power) and make my first V-Twin a Ducati (748, or one day a 999) since
the SV650 doesnt really have that V-Twin sound, at least not as I recognise
it.

Huh? WTF are you on about now? The SV650 most definitely has the
characteristic 90 degree V-Twin sound, as it's a 90 degree V-Twin.

The subtleties of that characteristic sound are all down to the pipe
(which can be changed) and the airbox (which can be changed).

Does it exactly mimic a Ducati in stock form? No, I suppose not.

Personally, I feel the OEM stainless exhaust system is a big point in
the SV's favor, and I wouldn't dream of replacing it just for a change
in sound. I wear ear plugs when on the bike. On those rare occasions
when I don't, I marvel at how loud the stock exhaust sounds. I can't
imagine how unpleasant it must be for those folks who have aftermarket
cans and don't wear ear plugs.

I also worry a lot more about how fun a bike is to ride, rather than
how it sounds or looks. On that score, the SV does very well in my book.
