Have most of Friday and some of saturday to spend in the area (staying
there Friday night).

I'm ashamed to admit I don't really know more than a handful of the many
great roads up there. But I have maps!

Can someone give me some recommendations?

Cheers

Fancy a nice day ride? Like roads with lots of bends and not a lot of
traffic?.

OK.

Get out your your maps.
http://ariel.ucs.unimelb.edu.au/~ben.../maps/Vic.html

At Yarra Junction, (heading away from melb) turn right at the lights.
Powelltown, Noojee, Hill end, Willow Grove (your map may show dirt, but
it's good tight bitumen) Trafalgar (get fuel if you need it), thorpdale,
Mirboo north. Turn left at Mirboo North for one of the best bits of
tight road anywhere. at Boolarra(?) turnround and head back to Mirboo
North. Just before you leave Mirboo North on the way to Leongatha,
there is a left turn that takes you an 'interesting' back way (good
roads) to Leongatha. On to Korumburra. On the Melbourne side of
Korumburra, there is a right turn that climbs up over the railway and
takes you to Warragul. It's nice. [1] From Warragul you can head up
through all the neerims and back through Powelltown to Yarra Junction.

[1] Got some more time?

OK, from Korumburra, head toward Melbourne, turn left at Loch (T
junction in the middle of town, probably signposted Wonthaggi. Follow
it. ~ 60k of tightish good surface along the top of the Gippsland hills.
Stop at the lookouts. After Archie's creek, turn left at the sign that
points to (I think) Bass or Glen Alvie. about 20 K of slightly nicer
road than what you have just done. At the Bass Highway, turn left,
relax a bit for the 4k to Grantville, then turn right and head back up
into the hills. At the top, there is a 4-way intersection (you would
have gone through it 30 minutes earlier) Go more or less straight ahead
(slightly leftish) and head back to Korumburra along some really noice
windy roads. (did I ask whether you like nice windy roads?) At
Korumburra resume as above.

Of course, if you don't have a whole day, you could always just head out
toward Warburton, and continue on, follow your nose through the Reefton
Spur to Marysville. Then follow the signs back to Healesville through
the Black Spur. Just past Healesville, turn left, and a fairly nice
road takes you back to the Warburton Why, turn left for Yarra Junction.

1).... as Moike said...Powelltown (WATCH those L-handers in the
tight-twisties--GRAVEL)/ Noojee. Turn rightish in Nojee, follow the road all
the way through Tanjil Bren and up to Mt. BawBaw. Coming back down the
mountain and about 8km out of the Alpine village (just after crossing the
river), turn left onto the dirt and follow that road for pretty exactly 20km
(DON"T turn into any of the 4wd tracks). Turn SHARP left, then right after
4km, 9km later turn left onto the bitumen, for a short run into Erica. Then
follow the signs to Rawson/ Walhalla for some sweet twisties (watch 2 of the
righthanders, badly broken black-top). Return: Walhalla/Rawson/Erica/ 4km
short of Moe turn right to Willow Grove, Follow road to Icy Creek, turn left
to Noojee/ Powelltown...

2)Yarra Junction/Warby/ up Mt. Donna Buang, coming back down the MTN, turn
Left onto the dirt at that turntable-style-carpark-naturwalk-thingo. good
dirt for about 14km before the (sometimes gravelly) bitumen starts again. At
the T-junction turn SHARP right to Marysville/ up Lake Mtn/ across to
Cumberland Junction and down the Reefton to Warby/ Yarra Junction.

3) As in 1) to Walhalla (fill up in Erica), follow the road through
Walhalla/ turns to dirt up the top-end of town....follow that for about 65km
of sometimes slow going (the views are breathtaking) to Matlock, turn left
for another 45km of good/ graded dirt and 10km of tar to Cumberland
junction, turn left down the Reefton to Warby. This is a good one if you
don't mind the dirt.

You've got a Peg, dontcha? )

Have fun
cheers
pete

If you want a bit of dirt instead, rather than going all the way into
Healesville, turn left down the Acheron way (turnoff is after Marysville,
about 200 metres before you hit the Maroondah Hwy in Narbethong). That will
take you right back into Warburton down the Mt Donna Buang road.

If you do go to down to Healesville turn left at Don Rd in Healesville (Just
after the first servo - the one at the Myers Creek Rd intersection), follow
that up the hill, when you get to the top and have a choice of two unsealed
roads, the road to the left has about 20km of dirt, a nice road even on a
sports bike which will take you *almost* to the top of Mt Donna Buang. If you
go to the right, there's only 6 or 7 km of dirt and you will land in the
backblocks of Launching Place...
