Is there a 16inch rear wheel that will bolt in place of the factory
17inch wheel and still retaining my disk brake?

Why? That would change your entire suspension
set-up. If you want to be able to put tubeless
tires on find a set of Lester rims. E-bay has them
on occasion...

I ride a 79' GL1000 frankly can't imagine a good
reason to go to a smaller rim...small tires don't
make sense.

Buy a set of Lester rims. Best place to find them
is Ebay. I run tubes in my ME880 and BT45 on my
bike with no issues. There are a lot of good tires
for the GL1000 out there. The Metzler gives good
feedback, grip, wet traction and wear(last one
gave me 18-20K miles) The BT45 does an excellent
job even if I only get 8-10K miles per tire. Both
are not very expensive...

Front I'm running 100/90/19
Back is a 120/90/17

I've run 110 up front and 130 in the back...works
good also.

I've got excellent road to test on. US2/US89 Road
to the Sun...MT200. All excellent roads to push
the limits of tire and traction.
