xr250 starting problem

I have an 86 (I think) Honda XR250. The only way I can get it started
is to put gas directly into the carb. I cleaned the carb and EVERY jet
is open. Even the pilot jet that I put a small wire thru. Once started,
it runs fine. So, I am thinking compression.

I haevn't adjusted the valves and the auto-compression release yet. If
someone knows the tappet settings and how to adjust the compression
release, i would appreciate it.

Any other comments are greatly appreciated as I don't have a manual
for this bike.

Also, I am in central Ohio and will sell this bike "as is" for $450.
There is no title, but I will supply you with a notorized bill of sale.

Could be compression, or maybe the idle mixture passages are all
plugged up and the previous owner turned the idle RPM screw too far up
in order to compensate. That defeats the starting enrichener. I
recommend turning the idle RPM screw all the way down and hand choking
the carburetor. Also, add about 3 ounces of Berryman's B-12
Choke and Carburetor Cleaner to a full tank of gas to clean out the
internal passages of the carb.

Isn't there an EPA sticker with valve clearances and idle RPM under the
seat?

I didn't look under the seat for the specs. I will in a few days and
let you know. I had a death in the family and I will be kinda busy.

Is the float bowl full or empty ? Seems a little early, but maybe
a vacuum operated fuel petcock ? Does it act the same way
on reserve ?

Does it act the same way warm as it does cold ? If it starts OK
warm, could be a choke problem.

When you try to start it and it won't start, are the plugs wet or
dry ?

Seems unlikely that it's compression if it runs OK after starting.
