This is only one data point, but it does suggest otherwise:

When we moved into our house in Haute Savoie a couple of years ago, a
neighbour from down the lane stopped to say hello over the garden fence and
chatted for a while. A few days later he stopped again, when my GF was in
the garden, and the following conversation ensued (in French, and obviously
recalled approximately from her account later):

Neighbour: I hope I didn't offend you the other day

    GF: What! How?

Neighbour: When I called you "rosbifs"

GF: <laughs> Of course not! Why should that worry us?

Neighbour: Only I understand you're Irish...

How we laughed.... Neither of us is, in fact, Irish.

To be fair, I don't remember that he did actually call us rosbifs - he may
well have done, though, and I wouldn't have been surprised or offended if
    he had.

  2. So they used to describe the English engineers for 10 year as I
previously stated, but didn't some how?
Something is wrong with this link and that is without opening it.

I've never taken it as a sign of offence whenever It's been used to
    refer to me.

BTW there's no point in arguing matters 'French' with des - he'll only
end up backing into a corner and kicking out with the usual "but I'm
the only real French person here so the rest of you know nothing"
argument. It's like a spoilt child saying "I'm right, so nerr, and
anything anyone else says it automatically wrong".

I just had a 'flashforward' to fifty years in the future when we're dead
and standing before what in Christian myth would be the pearly gates, so
to speak. When it comes time to read out the events of our lives, and
you have to relate that you spent five years doing your best to get a
motorcycle group to ignore a bloke who'd had the temerity to point out
that your money didn't buy you class.

'Did it work?' will ask the keeper of the gate.

    'No,' will be your response.

    'You fucking twat' he'll say.

I'd be surprised if he had. Or maybe he was old and still used words
    like 'boche' as well ?

What nationality are you, incidentally ? Your name has accents in it.

Because it is _the_ defining feature of his person.

As a matter of interest, despite being the 'enfant terrible' reviled by
nearly all of UKRM, I've refrained from revealing that in fact the
'classless loadsamoney' epithet applied to Ace, wasn't 'invented' by me
(although I do claim credit for 'gold taps').

If I revealed who first stated (this is an approximate quote from
memory), 'Ace's problem is that he's a poor boy made good and he thinks
that that buys him class. It doesn't', the person who said that to me
    would deny it.

I'm fairly sure it is. I'd say with a touch of jealousy thrown in there
    too.

  11. To misquote the old joke:

    responsibility..

that was exactly my point. What sort of person who felt they had any
sort of class would affect a Rick Parfitt-style hairdo and drive a
    volvo?
