Indeed, and I doubt that it'll go down that much anytime soon. Yes, the
oil price has come down somewhat but the weak pound isn't doing much for
imports so I guess we'll be seeing more price rises over the course of
    the year.

While watching what little savings you have diminish in value as we go
    along.

Eh? What sort of excuse is that? I have a "plain vanilla" repayment
mortgage. But that's little excuse for paying the standard variable
rate. A penny pincher like you should really know much better.

I've been meaning to buy a new snowboard for a couple of years. If I
thought for one moment it would turn me into a riding god then I
would, but I'm not certain that I'd notice a great difference for
    generall messing around.

Jesus H Christ - I thought I was taking the piss!

You really pay your mortgage by cheque?

I now get this image of TOG bartering with a set of SL125 piston rings on a
Z1 silencer for this months mortgage :)

Wanna bet about that? Go on, put some money on it. I'll bet a tenner
that inflation will be below 2% at some point in 2009 [1]
Well yes - a positive value for inflation means that prices are
increasing. But the collapse in oil and food prices, allied to the
discounting across huge swathes of the economy means that the index as
a whole is likely to be close to zero, if not negative.

[1] many commentators expect it to go negative, in fact

I'm laughing, but then worrying that the same criticism could be
applied to several others of us.

  12. Well, we've always regarded it as a debt, and the amount outstanding is
only about 30k, and the repayments under £300 per month....

Go below or stay below? Big difference, you know.
I hope they're not the same commentators who opined that house values
would only ever go up :).

My main concern regarding inflation is the current round of "quantative
easing" that seems to be viewed as the only cure for the current
    recession.

Erm, you *do* realise that a tracker mortgage can be set up as a
straight repayment? It's just a different type of determining the
    interest compared to an SVR.

I'm on a fixed rate for the next couple of years or so, and I haven't
even figured out whether it's worth dicking about with. I know what I
have to pay. I pay it. And get on with life.

I haven't got a fucking clue what mine was.

At least one of us should be worried...
