Well, wasn't it some actress bint what came up with the idea, or was
that an urban legend; I forget.

Qualcomm seem to claim a large chunk of the IPR in WCDMA based on their
IS95 work in the states; who did you work for?

  3. Not heard that one.
A company called SyFA, who were an offshoot of Computer Automation. CA,
apparently, held the patents on CDMA/CA in the, oh, late 70's/ early 80's, I
believe. Then CDMA/CD got popular. Summat like that, anyhow, it's a long
time back. CA built the world's first clustered super mini, or so they
claimed. I also worked for the last ever truly British company building real
fault tolerant mainframes - and no, it wasn't ICL!

    Well, frequency hopping it seems:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedy_Lamarr

Well, given that IS95 didn't come to market until about the early 90s
this was at least 10 years before there was any large scale
implementation. Of course, spread spectrum comms had/have military uses
    as well as civilian telephony.

I have only my other 20,000 posts from the Google archives (That's
20,000 if one doesn't include that long x-no-archive period I went
through) covering the last 12 years as evidence.

The Walsh code is used to uniquely define individual communication
channels. Walsh codes are “orthogonal” mathematical codes. As such, if
two Walsh codes are correlated, the result is intelligible only if
these two codes are the same. As a result, a Walsh-encoded signal
appears as random noise to a CDMA capable mobile terminal, unless that
terminal uses the same code as the one used to encode the incoming
    signal.

The walsh code is calculated by the walsh function

  8. Aha. Now you've pointed that out, it rings a very vague bell.
We were doing hard wired networking stuff - basically, the first LAN linked
super mini. (Do a Google on Naked Mini!) NOW, I don't know either standard
well enough these days to know if one inspired the other....

The easiest thing to do is for you to get another SIM card and I'll
give you the £10 for the credit on it. That way I don't get call from
    random Manx cats.

  18. I was recruited by the Oz defence boffins in 1983 to work on
jamming spread-spectrum radio on <classified> frequencies, probably
because of my expertise in random-number generation; since I really wanted
to work on the anti-Exocet missile[1] I declined, and went off to work on
    anti-matter chemistry in Canada instead.

[1] The one that fired away from a ship, then balanced on its arse until
it saw an Exocet coming in, made as big a radar signal as it could, "I'm
a ship! Look at MEEE! I'm a ship!" until the Exocet changed course towards
it, then gradually tipped on its side and led the missile away from the
real asset. I heard later that it was a real success story.
