I knew who Len Willing was Biggus! (Hence my saying "what happened to Len
    Willing?" a few posts back)

I hadn't heard either of the RUMOURS concerning his demise.

Yep and '83 (although he qualified on pole but his team-mate never made it
past the top of the hill 1st lap) and '85 where he literally tossed the
VF1000F into the mud and Pace (or was it Wayne Clarke) had to run out and
    collect it.

But I don't recall Gardner ever racing a GPZ900R like the photo claimed....

According to Jim Scaysbrook's "Australia's Motorcycling Heritage" it went:
1980 Gardner & Andrew Johnson (CBR1100) from Johnny Pace & Neil Chivas
    (Suzuki GSX1100)
    1981 Petersen/Hiscock, Roger Heyes & Malcolm Campbell, Boulden/Gall (Yam
XS1100) - Gardner rode with Robbie Phillis (GSX1100!) but Wayne dropped
it after the 2 hr mark.
1982 Gardner & Wayne Clarke (Mentor CB1100RC), Pace & Pete Byers, Geoff
    French & Alan Blanco.
    1983 Campbell & Rob Cox (VF750), Phillis & French (Matich VF750),Heyes &
Holden (GSX1000) (According to Scaysbrook, Gardner crashed early in the
    week & broke a finger & didn't race. Rob Scolyer & I got 5th on a VF750
    - my claim to fame in 6Hr history!)
    1984 - Oran Park - Richard Scott & Mike Dowson (RZ500), Pace & Gardner
(VF1000R), Robert Holden & Neil Chivas (Suzuki 750)
    1985 - Scott & Paul Feeney (Matich FJ750), Lenny Willing & Iain
    Pero(GPZ900R), Dowson & Kevin Magee (FZ750)
and '85 where he literally tossed the
I also remember Wayne Clarke throwing away a Mentor bike (Honda?) on the
first lap at Amaroo Park but I don't remember what year. I thought he
was teamed with Gardner then; I would have said 1983 too, but not so
    according to Scaysbrook.
    Neither do I.

OK I think I'm remembering it a bit clearer now.
    It was 1983.
Gardner/Clarke were favourites on the no1 bike (after winning the year
before) but Gardner got hurt and pulled out.
I can't remember who replaced him but he never got to race after Clarke
tossed the VF750 away very very early (I think first lap).
This prompted Mentor Motorcycles to put the CB1100R and the VF750 in the
window with a sign "First 1982, First Out 1983!"

I only ever attended two 6 hours. 1979 when I rode down from Brisbane on my
    mach111 and 1983 when I was on my Ducati 500SL Pantah. I can't remember
much of the '79 race but I loved the '83 race with Croz on the Apple bike,
Kevin Magee on a 600 Pantah and those odd shaft-drive XJ900s that seemed to
    be so bloody handy!

[I just checked "Australian Motorcycle year 83/84" and it said Glen Taylor
was Wayne Gardner's replacement with Wayne Clarke.
You're right; Campbell/Cox were on pole and Wayne Clarke was back in 8th.
I see Don Cox rated Rob Scoyler/ Roger Heyes is a big chance but dropped
them when Scoyler partnered with Bernie Summers instead!! (Actually he
didn't say that. He called Bernie "Wonderfully Enthusiastic"]

There was Rob Scolyer and Richard Scoulyar and one of them was somebody's
brother-in-law but I thought it was Richard and Wayne Gardner...

Hell yeah! (Although it was the earlier bikini-fairing model).
Richard Scott/Stephen Gall were lapping right with the front-runners until
they got skittled when a pink Katana crashed down near the pit entry. They
spent several minutes in the pits changing a broken handlebar and then
finished that same amount of time behind the winners!

Later that year Mike Dowson won the Surfer's Paradise 3-hour on an XJ900.

I wonder if they will bring back a 6 hour say at Philip Island , man that
    would be neat .
They could get Castrol to again back it since they ditched Larry Perkins .

That certainly was a motorcycle equivelent of Bathurst .We have nothing ATM.

Well, wasn't there going to be a Phillip Island 1000 in, like, 2003,
that was cancelled for some reason or other?

They held a round of the world endurance championships at Phillip Island
way back when.. the crowd was fairly low compared to what the GP was
    getting.

I still remember standing in dririder gear in the mud near southern loop
(the old campground area, not the new one) in the middle of the night in
the pissing down rain watching these bikes ride around with sheets of
water coming of the tyres and thier knees almost on the deck.

Several of the riders and officials had to be treated for hypothermia!

I don't think I was far off it myself...
