Ho-ho. I'll have you know it was on an AJS 31CSR 650. Speedmaster tyres
and Joe Lucas lights. Hmm, so not that much better really.

actually its the 42nd anniversary of my first trip to the TT this year, I
was the grand age of about 4 weeks at the time though[1]...

    [1] Thanks Dad!

I was making an arse of my engineering apprenticeship [1] and getting a
    job on the railway.

[1] 1986, top time to chose to go into light engineering!

And in those days a workshop *meant* a workshop - not a wanky meeting
with a few PCs and a Powerpoint presentation

That's true but not many motorcycles had oil coolers to cool the oil that
    was being squirted about.

....I assume they had oil coolers.

GSXRs? Yeah. As seen on Bandit 1200s.

The real marketing-speak was at the time, when Suzuki claimed they
were inspired by the water-cooled inline fighter plane engines of WW2,
until it was pointed out that they were glycol or water cooled....

I think it was Soichiro Honda who, back in the day, said that all
water-cooling did was put water between the engines and the air. I get
your point, though. essentially, the old GSXR engines were air-cooled,
but they broke new ground in letting the oil do more of the cooling
tan before courtesy of those humungous oil coolers.

Well, by that token I could be unconvinced by the water cooling on my old
K75 or Jag, for that matter, as it's still the air that does the cooling.

yup, 10 lathes, 6 mills, I think only 1 day a week was classroom based.

I was just about coming off crutches after a 14 months or so on sticks
    following a bike accident.

Had just started a job working in a two-way radio repair business and
got my first exposure to mobile phones (system 4) there.

Also looked after the radio system at Longleat which was fantastic.

Must have been a bugger when the baboons snapped all the aerials though.

Had more sense than to drive through the monkey enclosure!

Have been out of the van in the lion enclosure, bitten by a giraffe,
threatened by a rottweiler and seen a chimp masturbate though.

    Happy days.

But that had been done before, in high-performance car engines.

It wasn't just the piston, it also targeted areas like the top of the
chamber and it had a double rotor oil pump with high and low pressure
    circuits.
