    Gday all

my wife is looking at a 1998 Yamaha Majesty 250 scooter,

It has 18,000km on it, and its local to me, so id say most of those km are
    from highway use.

seller tells me he brought it in 2000, so its been sitting in a showroom..

going to go have a look at it, wondering what to expect.

what kinda serviing do they need to keep running, its engine should have a
good life span beyond 18k shouldn't it?

    cheers

thats what i thought, id rather spend 3k on a scooter she dont use than 8k
on a new scooter she uses about the same.

yeah its the tranny i worry about, probably need to change the rubber bands
    ever now and again.

but how many 1998 yammies 250's are out their with millions of keys going
    strong..

Other than that i think the scooter should be fairly simple and easy to
    maintain like any other bike.

The belt on my Runner managed less than 10,000km before shredding, but I
bet a tuned 2 stroke is harder on belts than a mild 4 stroke.

Well, a full service on the Mighty Scooter including all fluids, new
brakepads, and the belt, cost me $280.

replacing them's easy enough as far as I know. ON a Runner anyway, I
have no idea about any other scooter.

My old man had one a few years ago - he rode it to Cairns from the Gold
coast and sat on 110 all the way.
From memory he did around 70,000 kms on it before trading it on a Tmax
(500). I think he changed the belt every 20,000 - I remember him saying that
the new belts he had fitted looked in the same condition as the ones he
    replaced.
He`s now done 70,000 kms on the Tmax and is updating to a 650 Suzuki
    scooter.

For the price I`d go for it.

    cheers

i wonder what happens if ya left a belt on it, id doubt they would wear much
    like you said.
if it snaps probably wouldnt be as bad as a timing belt or something..

ta, 70,000km is a fair way off.

Mine started shedding fibres. I presume it would eventually snap.
How bad that would be would likely depend on how fast the truck behind
    you was going...

She may be Lizzy the second to you, but to me, she's just plain Liz.

I found myself riding home at about midnight last night on a 100cc
Yamaha scooter which ran out of both high and low beam 5km from the next
petrol station on a poorly lit section of industrial docklands. Finally
got to the petrol station and borrowed a screwdriver to get at the
globe, a weird looking 12v 35/35w globe which this petrol station (and I
suspect just about every other) didn't stock. The bayonet fitting was
more like the size of a household globe than the average automotive
    unit.

why the bloody hell would they not just use a typical h3 globe..

a tranny was something i worried about, being the first.if they last
    50-70,000 bucks, then thats good.

since yourve owned 3, when i look at this one, what should i be looking at
    for things that are stuffed?

oh btw, do they run on standard bike oil since no clutch, what other
maitanace do ya need to do, is it easy, know any forums for ppl like you who
    owned a dozen off them.

    * I'm assuming that's a scottish take on it- it's also true of Oz,
aussie coins should be just Queen Liz - not QE2 she's the first QE we've
    had)

As you, and John, correctly state, neither Scotland, nor Australia, has
    had a QE previouslty.

Many years ago, in Scotland, folk in Scotland used to blow up Post
Office letterboxes, because they had QEII on them. Eventually the PO
    changed that to plain QE.
    You are correct again.

However, I do admit that Liz does a good job, and, when the time comes,
    may be hard to replace.

And not just for the sheer enjoyment of blowing up a letterbox?
