Well I'm kinda hopin' she'll prove impossible to replace with anyone
    acceptable to the Australian public

    JL
(when a few more old farts die off, including One Eyed Johnny, we should
be able to get it done, and have an Aussie head of state - and before
the monarchists start bleating, the GG is *not* our head of state, the
constitution specifically calls him out as being the REPRESENTATIVE of
our head of state (the queen))

It's really a matter of how well you manage to gee-up the
Australian press. Big Ears is, in my view, not a bad bloke
and at least equally up to the task as is Mummy. The trouble
is that when you get the likes of Richard 'The Plagiarist'
Carleton and his buddies at channel Nein and Seven on the job,
the 'thinking' Australian public will be climbing all over
each other to profess their belief in whatever version of
'truth' is foisted upon them this month.

The republican movement has, in a sense, missed a golden
opportunity just recently. Only a month or so ago, the 'thinking'
Australian public would have been perfectly happy to accept
Schapelle Corby as their new monarch. That opportunity is
gone now, but the 'thinking' Australian public is no doubt
reading and waiting for the next 'truth' to come along.

I must confess to being deeply suspicious of a movement that
seeks to hide history and heritage for no good reason. It cannot
possibly be 'for no good reason', and so I question what short
term business benefit stands to be gained by such meddling. I
am simply not prepared to accept that any change to Australia's
Constitution, much less such a substantial alteration as is
proposed by the republican movement, can possibly be taken so
lightly. We are not American, we do not amend our Constitution
at the drop of a hat. It is my view that, if there is indeed
to be an amendment to remove the Monarch of England from the
position of Australian head of state, then it should be *properly*
debated and said debate should occur on a timeline that neither
you nor I will be around to see the conclusion of.

On a slightly lighter note, if you kicked Lizzie (and in
truth, it's probably Big Ears getting the arse, not Liz) out
of the job, then who the **** would you replace them with?
Australia is too young as a country to deliver anyone (nor
to have the ability to choose someone) to properly do the
job. To put the PM in the head of state job, or to put someone
appointed by the PM in the role, would be to sell out to
big business. Despite that we're coming terribly close, we're
    not America yet.

I'm equally concerned that a move to kick the current head
of state out would further open the door to the Americans.
Little Johnny's sell-out to whit the 'Free' Trade Agreement
has done quite enough damage for one millenium already, TYVM.

    I'm not dead yet either!

Over my dead body (yeah yeah, I know, that can be arranged!)

Yeah, like who? We haven't got, and cannot produce, anyone up
    to the task!

It's good to see that you're paying attention in class :) :)

We really still need to be treated as children of mother England because we
are so immature (except you, of course). I think you underestimate the
    'thinking' Australian public.
Huh? Like India rejecting the Raj in 1947? All that British culture lost. I
think that whilst we maintain the Monarch as head of state we will continue
to be seen as a colony.
Debated by whom and why should it take a generation or two?

John, you have no idea how much I'd love Oz to be a republic, _but_...

how do we get to pick?

I will never vote for who-ever the PM selects.(Whichever PM)

God knows, we have enough pollies in Oz already. :-(

How about a national lottery, with anyone with a proven connection to
    any political party excluded?

Popular elections? I'd vote for big-ears before I'd want Russel Crowe
    as pres....

As it happens, I'd accept Marie B. (current Gov Gen of NSW) but, no
offence, she is about the same age as Liz.

Whereas I favoured the original proposal, that of a head of state appointed
    by the Government.

As far as I'm concerned, the direct electionists scuttled our chance at a
republic in 2000 so they can suffer in their jocks.

No republic! Long live the Queen!

OK, you've got me there. I *would* be prepared to accept a
republic/president type arrangement under 'certain' circumstances.

GB, mind you, that particular topless shiela is probably well-and-
    truly wrinkled by now!

Hang on a cotton-pickin' minute! Isn't that how we got
    Little Johnny?

GB, OK, so not strictly speaking, but we knew we'd get 'im
if we voted for his mob.[1]

[1] I had to put that bit in, 'cos JL is doing Legal
System 101 right now, and he'd take me to task, quoting
from one of Professor Lane's books if I didn't!

What's that line about anyone who wants to be a politican
being automatically excluded from taking up a role as a
    politician? Douglas Adams?
