Oh what complete twaddle - hide history ? We have a head of state who is
not an Australian citizen. I find this repugnant.

Regardless of whether it is customary for her not to exercise her powers
or not, the reality is they do exist, and for a foreigner to have the
right to refuse to ratify Australian laws is completely unacceptable to me.
In other words the Howard defence, make it impossible to have a debate
that might lead to an outcome you wouldn't be happy with, well it worked
last time (forced a choice between two outcomes while ignoring the
outcome most people wanted), so why not run it again, hey ?
Oh give me a fucking break, we can't manage to find a suitable president ?

Piss off that has to be the worst case of cultural cringe I've seen in a
bloody long time. Poor little Australia is too insignificant and
incompetent to come up with a someone suitable. Puhleese. William Deane
did a good job as GG, and seeing as the monarchist keep trying to argue
the GG is the real head of state then you can't possibly object to him
being a Prez for 5 or 6 years then can you ?

To put the PM in the head of state job, or to put someone
Not shit, nice furphy. Did anyone EVER suggest this was a good idea ?
Slow down on the psychotropics dude. The model the majority of
Australians favour (and yes majority is not a typo, between 2/3s and
3/4's of Oz prefer this model, which is why Howard wouldn't allow it be
presented in a referendum) is an elected president president on a fixed
    term.
Agree with your negativity about the FTA - it's seriously damaged our
economy that JWH has "managed so well"
    Easily remedied.
You might have a point, given the Australian public put Howard in
charge, maybe they can't be trusted to elect a suitable president, but
hey we have to give them the benefit of the doubt...that's democracy
Yes, that'd be the undergrad class 10+ years ago which lead me to
    actually read the constitution...

I have to admit, even as a committed republican I had to grit my teeth
and say "lesser of two evils" when it came to the referendum.
    Sounds good. 1 year terms.
On what basis does everyone assume that some B list celeb will get the
gig ? Ireland manage to elect suitable Presidents in a similar system to
what is proposed, ditto quite a few other countries.
Absolutely, she'd be a good contender, don't see what age has to do with
it, I object to Liz because she's not Australian, not because she's old.

No, it's important for a country to be able to view itself as
independent in law. The fact that our current leader want to arse lick
Bush is hopefully a short term problem that will disappear when he
finally quits (with Labor the way they are I can't see him getting voted
out anytime soon). At least when Bush gets booted at the end of his term
the republicans are going to struggle to get another republican prez in.
Oh what a crock, the republicans are pissy because JWH very cleverly
nobbled the debate by excluding the one form of republic that everyone
wanted, and forced a choice between a crappy form and the status quo.
Hell, I had trouble choosing between the two available options and I've
been pro republic since my early teens.

Put a referendum up tomorrow, with no publicity, two options - maintain
status quo or have a popularly elected president who takes the GG's
place in all constitutional senses and it would be passed. Howard knows
this, it's why he wouldnt allow it be in the terms of reference for the
republic debate. I mightnt like him but that was a stroke of genius
    strategic ploy
On what basis do you assume the public will do this ? While my opinion
of the Australian public's nous isn't terribly high, I really can't see
this happening. There are any number of countries with elected
president's and B list celebs rarely get a look in, the US and Ronald
Reagan is about the only one who springs to mind, and he was a
politician longer than he was an actor.

Why do we need a President AND a PM?
If we do have a head of state I don't see the need for s/he/Zebee to be
elected by the people. The PM isn't, the GG isn't, the Queen isn't.

So how do you get a Billy Deane and not a Hayden or Hollingworth or
    Kerr or John bloody Laws?

Or a John Howard come to that?

What will the Presidential powers be?
What will the mechanism be to get said Prez?

I am in favour of a check on a government, but I don't want a
    political hack, I don't want a media darling and I don't want a PM's
    yes man.

I can't think of a system that can reliably produce a suitable Prez in
    any country....

But then I don't think any system of government works above a village
    level anyway.

but will you have more chance for a free motorcycle for everyone if
there's a direct election? That's the big question.

I don't think that a head of state should be chosen by "accident of birth"
and that her uncle preferred a divorcee to the job.

I don't expect or want bribes to elect someone. I want good
    government/management.
OK, OK, I'm very naive and overly optimistic. We need to shoot every third
