My first pair of trendy bendy titanium frames cost me 400 squids once
fitted with varifocal, reactolite, anti-scratch coated, tinted and god
knows what else dogs bollox lenses. 7 years on and the frames are as
good as the day I bought them and the dogs bollox lenses cost around
    120.

It's only displayed on my license because I ticked the 'Do you need to
wear glasses/contact lenses/misc. eye correction when driving' box
when I applied for my provisional.

It's much like a non-friend that I know who has medical conditions
(like very active and not-very-well-controlled Epilepsi) who didn't
mention it on the license application form which would otherwise have
prevented him from being granted a license.

I remember my optician asking me 'do you drive a car?' when I changed
to SpecSavers - it's noted on my records there so I expect that should
I have a sight problem that would prevent me from fulfilling a
requirement to drive in all situations then they probably have some
legal responsibility (?) to inform the DVLA, but I might be wrong and
it could just be a marketing tool for them to sell me another set of
    'driving glasses.'

This is the reason my mother hates going to the optician, even though
there is a history of diabetes in our family. "Your eye test is free,
mother." "But I don't want to spend more money on new glasses, Nicky."
"You don't wear them anyway, and eye tests aren't just a scheme for
selling new glasses, it's a general check up of the health of your
eye." "Oh do shut up, Nicholas."

    By weight, presumably.

What are the warning signs, btw?

IMHO those anti-glare, anti-scratch & toughened lens coatings are
    worth every penny.

You drink a lot, you get tired, you piss a lot and your piss tastes sweet.
Oh, and you lose weight. I shocked some people in the office recently by
casually remarking that "I'm either a borderline diabetic or I drink too
much coffee" after returning from the toilet. This was apparently "a
terrible thing to say", the poor dears.

  10. I found that a couple of years ago; I normally get new glasses
when I visit Oz, due to an unfortunate incident with a Canadian optician.
Last time I was home was '98 or '99, but a few years ago I lost my
glasses. So I fronted up to Boots and the prescription I ended up with
was within plausible statistical deviation of my last Aussie script.

There's no "01" on my licence, but the photo does show me wearing specs.

My new specs will have lenses costing £270, that's just for the fucking
lenses, frames extra. It doesn't help that I need a 15 prism base out
    split between both lenses.

If I don't have the superthin jobs at that cost then the lenses will be
approx 10mm thick at the outer edges. I don't think my neck muscles will
be able to cope with that, so superthin ones it is then.

  16. <sigh> And I bet she won't listen to the emotional blackmail, eh? I've a
diabetic friend who is registered blind. Went for the damn eye check up far
    too late, silly bitch.

  17. And when you say tired, think permanent utter exhaustion to the point of
debility. We ain't talking TATT syndrome here. Best friend was diagnosed
with Type 2 a whi;le back: the tiredness was a total inability to function.

    Kind of a giveaway, no?

The thing is that the 01 will only be mentioned at the time of
application for the licence. It won't take into account future needs
    for specs.

Or not. I can't find my licence to check whether it has an 01 or not.
However, although I usually wear glasses, I'm legal without them.
