Found a low miles R1 in south fucking wales of all places.

2000 with 15k on the clock, decent mot & tax.

    He's after £2k dead.

    How does that sound?

Great choice of bike for the winter... ;-)

How much history have they got for it?
What condition are things like the tyres / chain and sprockets etc in?

Blah blah... the usual questions you need to ask of most bikes really.

What about the plastics / paint - original looking / any damage?

Oh, and these have an EXUP valve, don't they? Ask them when that was
    last serviced etc.

    Dealer or private?

Remarkably, for such a shit place, there are a couple of reputable traders.

Exactly what kind of answers would you expect for £2k?

At that sort of price you'd expect something with little or no service
history, almost fucked tyres, original chain and sprockets and
original rear shock. In other words you'd need to spend a grand (1) to
    make it worth £2.5k

It'd fetch a couple of hundred more in the spring but right now it's
probably worth what the guys asking for it and £2k isn't a lot for
    that kind of performance.

    (1) £500 for a 16k service, £200 for tyres, £100 for chain and
sprockets and £200 for a shock off Ebay. Job done.

It doesn't matter what the answers may or may not be, but they're
still questions he'd be well advised to ask before arranging to even
    go view it, no?

That, and 'does it pop out of 2nd gear under load' is another one
IIRC, you need to ask with older ones of these.
    Maybe, maybe not.

Xmas is round the corner and bikes, especially litre class sports
ones, are generally hard to shift even for sensible money at this time
    of year.

And this year we're in the middle of a rather overbearing recession
    which is also depressing values.

That, and the seller is in a relatively off the beaten track shithole.

It maybe this bike is actually a good one in good order, but the
seller has had little response so far to any ads he's placed, and he
wants the money in the bank before Xmas?
It is at this time of year if all the answers to the above questions
    are the wrong ones.

Bloke must be skint, new chain & sprocket, new tyres & services 3 months
    ago.

Service history dubious in my mind, buthe has paperwork.

I'd echo what all the others say. Ask for some hi-res pix first,
before you do a 500-mile round trip to find it's actually a shed. If
it's really good, then actually the price is about right, for the
reasons JackH states. If it needs 'stuff', then Bonwick is on the
    money.

Why don't you just advertise it on ebay now? Tell the bloke you'll buy
it, sell it on ebay directly, pocket the cash, job done. Why bother with
    all that tedious
    buying-delivery-insurance-v5-form-filling-riding-it-for-a-tank-of-petrol
    bit in the middle?
