2005 Spring French Run

Before you all slump down in front of your Christmas dins, I'll be
looking at putting together the 2005 French Run in the New Year.

Venue - the Ardennes, if possible. Last year this was the plan, and then
we had more people saying they wanted in than the hotel could take, so I
had to change venue, and then people dropped out so we *could* have done
the Ardennes after all....

So this time it really will be first come, first served (except for YTC
who's already made me swear to keep him a couple of places on pain of
death, plus Liz & Niall ditto), and I guess we're looking at 40 maximum:
more like 35 given the usual Single Room Sociopaths.

Date: May Bank Holiday, as ever. Two days: out on Friday 29 April; back
on Sunday 1 May, leaving the Bank Holiday of 2 May for the
whippet-keepers and carrot-crunchers to get back to their hearths and
recover. Yes, that means you'll have to take the Friday as a holiday.

The roads in the Ardennes are *fabulous*: smooth, relatively empty, and
very fast. Belgium is just a few miles away for those seeking cheap
baccy and take-home beer. The food should be good.

Prices: much the same as before. You're looking at about ukp30+ per
head, half board with a four-course dinner, based on two sharing a room,
plus another 60 quid for the ferry. So roughly ukp120 all in. Booze
extra.

For the newbies, this is half to one-third what you'd pay on one of the
commercial organised trips. But then this isn't escorted: it's a matter
of "Here's the ticket and a map, here's the details of the hotel,
dinner's at eight, see you there."

Also for the newbies, the food will be excellent: I promise. The boozing
will be considerable.

Previous highlights -

Big Tony running out of fuel despite a Paris-Dakar 30-litre tank on his
R1150GS.

Fr.Jack "redecorating" the bathroom and driving Prawn out to sleep on a
sofa in the lounge.

Prawn's F650 breaking down, and 20 bikes streamed past with not one
bugger stopping (never mind - we fixed it for him at the hotel).

SteveH's famous 80-quid bottle of wine.

Someone running down a hotel corridor at 3am, hammering on a bedroom
door, and bawling: "FOR ****'S SAKE, DODGER: STOP SNORING!!"

Tim Crowther spilling a glass of water in his room, causing the hotel
manager to have a hissy fit because he thought Tim had got so pissed
he'd wet the bed.

Ash having a tailpack swing into the back wheel of his R1 at eeeek! mph.

And so it goes.

Almost certainly in for this one.

 

Nice to see things never change...

 

This year, however, pending takeovers actually enhance my job security
rather than leave it in doubt. Mind you, last year it was moving house 4
months behind schedule that cocked things up.
