My esteemed mechanic said he would expect $30-50 for used ones... but he
hasn't needed one for "a long time". You could be right :) New ones are
    $300.

And now for the bad news... the rear wheel spline on my R65 is getting
pretty thin (it has done around 250kk). Replacement cost for spline on
final drive and matching spline on wheel: $1200. I guess that makes up for
    all those chains-'n'-sprockets I haven't bought.

Gary (let's have another round of "I could get another R65 for that!")

  2. Lets see. I recently (at around 120k km) put my second set of
replacement sprockets on the Monster, and the fourth replacement chain.
I pay ~$150 for sprockets and about the same for a chain. So to get to
240k km I'm expecting to spend somewhere round $1800 (and probably
another $100 in chain lube too...)

Looks like you come out ahead... (I suspect even the Spada wouldn't work
out _that_ much cheaper that your splines either...)

Don't complain to me. In the past three years, Ive sunk more than the
current market value of my bike into my bike. And I haven't done the
    splines.

  4. Certainly cheaper than a $990 driveshaft for an R100GS at 65,000km

Hmmm... how do they look? My mechanic says that rust is abrasive, he's seen
these $1200 splines flogged out in 10,000km. He recommended stuffing them
with grease every tyre change. Maybe I should have been using waterproof
grease; maybe it's time for rubber grease.

Well, the mechanic didn't mention them when he changed the tyres a
couple of weeks ago. Given that he did check things like head bearings,
brake pads etc, (I know because he mentioned them.. one was a free
tighten and the other was a warning about doing them next time) and he's
an old bimmer specialist, I sort of 'assume' he checked the splines.
    I'll ask him next time.......
