Andrew, or BT, you may be able to answer a question, a few weeks ago, I received an email with the information of a certain planet which was coming the closest it has ever been to Earth and would be as bright if not brighter than the moon, also as large as the moon, Today I asked the bloke who sent the email to me and another woman standing there claimed it was a hoax, but, then I told her that when I was on a constitutional outing to the lemon tree, I saw a planet which was brighter than most other stars and close to the moon, I took photos of it and downloaded it and saw that it was certainly a planet or a small moon, blue in colour, Question is...... Have you or anyone else knowledgable in the stellar regions, heard of it and which planet it is ?? I also took photos of the smiley moon when it was
wrote in I figure it would be pretty much indistinguishable from the trophy for the most elaborate coffee-making apparatus, no? GB

I have a travel scope but even it's a bit big for the bike to be honest. I'll have to think about the issue of telescopes and bike travel G-S

In the last couple of weeks try Jupiter though it's not bluish. There's a few hoaxes about Mars and a Mayan reference but there's about as much credibility in them the next year too. I mean can you believe Mars will be at its closest in thouasands of years for four years straight now ? If any planet ever winds up visually as large as the moon, we're probably fucked. The moon is roughly 384400 km away and a radius of 1750Km. By comparison Venus is ~3000Km across but it is vastly further away. To appear visually as large as the moon, it would need to be roughly within 1M Km. According to Wolfram Alpha it's about 60 times that far away. I think somehow the deranged auntie who invented it is having a laugh reading your post. Did it have an incredimail or hotmail link on the bottom of the pearl of wisdom ?
Reason I posted this question is that I took photos of a star or planet which was far brighter and larger than others not that I believe the email, but with the thingy in the sky, you never know
I was envisaging a trike with a big fat refractor telescope complete with its own dome fairing sitting behind the driver (I say 'driver' because trikes lean exactly like cars don't.) g,d,r... ================= Onya bike Gerry
