Most groups have their own bonfire (some very small groups don't bother)
but there is also a very large communal central bonfire (think BTH size
maybe even a bit more) down in the gully between the camping area and
the entrance/bar/band area if you prefer that. On top of that there is
a large brick/sand fire pit with open sides and a flue in the outside
drinking area. It gets cold walking between the fires though...

  13. In the middle of winter, any fire is a good fire

    so much cold

    so little wood

Depends on your definition of luxury I guess. Only one had hot showers,
a bar, bands, firewood delivered to where you want it, sealed road all
the way to the gate, a bakery within walking distance, several
    motorcycle racetracks on site etc

It was cold between the bonfires near Tenterfield, which I found
rather surprising for a place bordering on Qld.

However, my cruddy photos may give an idea of what such bonfires look
    like:

At that rally, I was with just 2 other people, and we were too lazy to
find wood for a fire so we commandeered someone else's bonfire in
exchange for port. They didn't get my stones though.

the sign of a good campfire commandeering is when they supply the fire,
    a chair and beer!

    You are kidding!
Tenterfield is renown as one of the coldest cities in NSW! (Generally only
    slightly warmer than neighbouring Armidale!)

I had a sleeping bag that survived the summer in Tasmania years ago
(ie, good for damn cold weather - a nice light weight compact but warm
goose down bag great for hiking). So I thought it would be fit for
anything. Turns out I need to buy a bag rated to -5degC before I go
    camping again...
