2010; the bikes and times

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by stephen.packer, Dec 31, 2010.

  1. So... What did I do bike-wise in 2010?

January: Prepared sidecar for an outing to the Elephant.

February: Went to Elephant. And back. No issues.

    March: Can't remember...

    April: Bought XT660R...

    May: Sold sidecar. Sob.
Sold K75; but **** from ebay dropped out and fucked me around.

    June: Five day tour: UK-Munich-Ziri(Slovenia)-Zagreb-Prague-?(France)-UK
    all powered by K1100.
    Bought YZ250 (mistake...)
Discovered the Yamaha Off Road experience...

    July: Chimay; XT660.
    More Off road experience.

August: Holiday... UK-Bruce's and then on to Sicily in three days.
Return a week later doing Sicily to UK in three days. Ouch. Again
    courtesy of K1100 Autobahn muncher.
    Bought WR250

September: More off road experience (+!)

October: Still more off road experience.

November: Two day enduro school... at off road experience.

December: Rebuild YZ250 (almost completed... rebore to be done).
    XT660 broke down ...

In all somewhere between 10 and 15k miles.

Three bikes purchased. Two bikes sold, one didn't sell properly.

For 2011? Some semi-competitive enduro riding (but ridden in an 'at
least I'm doing it' way). Probably another enduro bike purchase.
Probably. Plus flog a shit load of old stuff at kempton park.
    Hopefully.

Happy New Year one and all...

Sold one, bought another. Got Snorky running and put the Guzzi back on
the road - didn't ride either.

Elefant was good fun and exactly the conditions it's supposed to be:
    http://www.sweller.co.uk/2010elefant/

No Norway? Is that the competitive bit...

    Yes, and that.

  3. Noooo! Some Norway but in an anti-competitive sense.

1 purchased, one revived after 3 years gathering dust in the garage,
    none sold.

    Count now stands at 4.

Turned the faux WR250 Yam in to a speed hill climber and rode it at 6
events. Managed to keep ahead of my lad at all those he rode at, except
one - his bike is getting no tuning this winter.

Rediscovered my enthusiasm for riding after having great fun at a
Cadwell Park track day on the GFR. I'm slow, but not as slow as I
thought I was. Many thanks to those who persuaded me to go.

A dalliance with a French tart cruelly ended and a replacement bike
purchased to return to an all Italian fleet with the exception of the
    YZ.
The 2C/375 Morini is virtually rebuilt and will be taking to the road as
soon as decent weather arrives. I made a start on getting the motor out
of the YZ250 today for de-rattling and mild tuning - got to keep in
front of that pesky YZ85 somehow.

Looking forward to the French Run and the TT on the Shiver.
Indeed. Tempus fugit, carpe diem and all that.

Commuted, spent far too much time repairing punctures on the CB13, did
the French Run, did Bearn again, GL15 ate its alternator, CBX went to
Essex and back, did 20% of this year's RBR, splurged my wad on a GL18.
    Fingers crossed.

2010 was a good year. Let's hope 2011 is as well (for everyone).

Well that put fixing the TiVo off for a few more minutes...I guess I'd
better get stuck into it now.

    Echoed.

    The bikes & times.

    Commuted on V11.

    V11 blew up.

    Long delay waiting for parts.

    Rebuilt the V11.

Rode V11 to Longleat & back on holiday. No hiccups except a momentary
    oil warning panic.

Commuted a lot on V11. I like this bike.

    V11 gearbox broke.

Fixed V11 gearbox. Satisfyingly easy fix. I love this bike.

V11 immediately developed a worrying engine rattle.

    Love affair slightly jaded.

Retightened V11 alternator nut, this time included some Loctite.

    Worrying engine rattle disappears.

I love this bike. For now.

Trackday on Aprilia. Wonderful piece of kit. Do I ride it enough to
justify keeping it? Maybe just a couple more track days, then decide.
Or even, and here's a dangerously radical thought, just enjoy it and
ride the damn thing. OK, avoiding salty roads.

Rode YZ, not once, but twice! Note to self: just ride the damn thing.
You know you want to. Note that LH fork seal really is leaking. Arse.

Bought fork seal & chain & sprox for YZ.

Failed to get round to fitting fork seal or chain or sprox to YZ.
    There's always next year^wthis year.

Finally unable to convince myself that top gear whine on Quota was
there all the time. Decided Quota needs intimate examination of
    gearbox internals.

Failed to get round to opening Quota gearbox. There's always this
    year....

    <snip>

    Impressive

January to July - did very few pleasure miles, most were spent
commuting. Couldn't use the bike much because of kidney problems and
    recovering from operations

July - rode to Wales after shop shut at 6, got pissed then rode home
    next morning.

    August - commuted some more

September - rode to Malta on Versys

October - rode home from Malta having done 13 countries in total on the
    trip

November - did very few miles, probably no more than 700

December - did virtually no miles (less than 200) until yesterday when
I went to Norwich in the pissing rain. Why I took the bike is beyond
me, as I have a BMW 3 series and a Fiesta van sitting outside

Can't remember buying any new bikes this year, but sold my beloved
SpazzTrakka to Auvache. So a pretty uneventful year really, aside from
doing the trip to Malta that I'd been promising myself for the last 32
    years.

April, BOSM, which was quite cold as usual and the journey up made it
quite clear that a year of cross-town commuting on the thou had frazzled
    its clutch.

May, missed the French Run for the first time since I started going on
them. Ho hum. Tentative plans to do the French MotoGP at Le Mans failed
too. Not an amazing month for motorcycling.

June, my first TT and my first run over the Mountain. A good time had by
all. Plans to go to the Silverstone MotoGP derailed by the poxy World
    Cup.

July, sold the RGV. It hadn't turned a wheel in almost a year so it went
to a good home with a man who'll thrash it and rebuild it in equal
measure. Having got rid of something daft and impractical, it was
quickly replaced with a far more sensible and practical KTM Duke.
    Hurrah!

September, a late surge in the year's biking efforts. A day off-roading
at the Yamaha ORE in Wales, including one fairly spectacular crash. And
then my first (and second) trackday at Cadwell. Next year I hope to do a
    dry one.

October, a trip as a spectator (and it's staying that way) to the Weston
Beach Race. Beer! Sand! Port! Whores! Camping in subzero conditions!

November, drunkenly book a trackday at Brands for the day after the
    office christmas party.

December, trackday cancelled due to snow. Thank **** for that.

Overall the biking year was a slow start but had something of an indian
summer. 2011 should be a blinder - BOSM, French Run, TT again,
Silverstone MotoGP, possibly Misano MotoGP, at least one trackday and
another day off-road. Bring it on!

    Jan-Feb commuted some of it
Mar-Jul largely unloved for various reasons
Jul few trips into Welsh hills then proper holiday to Ardennes with "non-
UKRM friends off the internet". Couple of days on my tod in the Vosges
before dropping into Chez Ace. Afternoon chewing the fat with J then
getting pissed with Ace in the evening. Pleasant ride along a section of
the Alsace Wine route then a bit more Vosges before the boring plains in
Marne. Reims is one of my favourite overnight stops. I stumbled on a nice
Place (du Forum) I had missed on past visits and had a superb meal in Edgar
Bistrot washed down with a bottle of Pomerol. Cold & windy for the journey
    home but no rain fortunately.

    Aug - occasional leisure ride
Sept-Oct more commuting, no leisure rides
Oct-Dec very little commuting, no leisure rides
