Adie's away in the USA that weekend so I might come out to play. I'll
have a set of Trelleborgs fitted by then so there'd be no excuse about
the bike not being fit for it leaving it simply down to whether or not
I can get down there in time for the start.

It's about 120 miles from home so I'd have to be leaving at about
06:30 to allow for a coffee/smoke break to warm up. I'll have a think
    about it.

Probably none. There's not much technical stuff over that way (if you
stay legal), & the 'big bike' group will be sticking to the easy
stuff. Of course all bets are off if the snow comes back...

It's a bit less for me but more shakedown/reliability trials wouldn't go
    amiss.

Learning a bit more about how to balance it etc before we get to the snow
wouldn't be too bad an idea either.

Indeed it was. Impressive. I did buy an X7 once for spares which had a
gudgeon pin and the small end eye with a bit of conrod in the _expansion
    chamber_!

That's where my LC's gudgeon pin ended up - the piston crown was stuck
about 3/4 way up the bore.

  12. Update... I *might* be taking the XT; depends on Fowlers/Yamaha fixing
it at a price I can accept...

  13. Conversley.. I wanted a swing arm and a replacement fork for the YZ250
and ended up buying a bunch of engine spares too; barrel and piston
(fucked 2.00mm oversize), engine (looked fucked, clutch missing and
    gearshift welded on).

I looked at the YPVS actuating lever on it because the one on the bike
I'm rebuilding was looking fucked (actually inoperable because bits were
missing...) and I thought I'd just whip the head off...

Bloody hell, it's got a new 1.00mm oversize piston and rings in the
barrel which has a bore that looks like it's been honed and not used.
Measured ring end-gap in cylinder and it's all well within spec.

So that barrel, piston and ringset has gone on the engine and now I've
finished rebuilding the engine along with replacing every bearing on the
frame and many in the engine.

It had better run when I try to start it...

  15. Not sure what year yours is but I've got the puller for the flywheel, in
fact I've got every tool I needed to strip the engine, replace the
casings, change engine and frame bearings etc. etc.

After a couple of months of very part time fettling:

    - The engine's been rebuilt with everything checked, broken crankcasing
    replaced.
    - New frame bearings; literally every bearing and suspension linkage
    piece excepting the wheel bearings.
    - Forks rebuilt and repaired (part replaced)
    - Swing arm repaired (now has working adjusters!
    - Brakes rebuilt.

Just put the engine in the frame this afternoon and kicked it over (no
fuel/carb...) with a compression tester attached: about 120psi. Much
better than the 30-40 it was managing before I rebuilt.

Also have a reasonable spark, hope it's good enough to ignite the fuel
when I try to start it in the next couple of weekends (once I've tried
to get the replacement exhaust to fit).

The engine wasn't that hard to work on to be honest. Maybe I should
reserve these statements for when it's running though...

  16. It died on me; I took it to London and was on the way back to Bath. It
just stopped running at about 95-100mph in the outside lane as I was
    (trying to) overtake traffic.

I presumed the bar muffs had hit the kill switch but they hadn't.
Coasted to the hard shoulder, checked fuses and waited three hours for
    recovery.

Garage inspection the following lunchtime suggests that the ECU pulse to
the fuel injector isn't pulsing. Suspect it's the ECU itself.

Took it to Fowlers on Friday. Should get a call tomorrow. Hopefully
the call says "We found that the secret kill switch had been thrown, all
fixed" rather than "It's a new ECU and Yamaha want 530.70 plus vat, plus
fitting..." Alternatively "The ECU's borked but because the bike's only
2 and a half years old and hasn't been fucked around with we're only
going to charge 100 quid for it" would be acceptable...

I'd rather look silly and have my fault diagnosis proved wrong than pay
full price.... but please don't let it be an intermittent fault...
    pretty please?

Mine's a 96 (4SR). According to the Clymer manual there are some fairly
    significant differences to yours.
Nothing obviously bust on mine but the rattling has got me thinking a
bottom end rebuild may be required.
Did the rear shock linkage etc. on mine this time last year with the aid
of just a big nut and bolt.
Mine seam reasonable. They don't leak and the hillclimbs give them a
quiet life. Though they would benefit from stiffening up for demon
braking with the oversize wavy disk. might experiment with oil weight
    and capacity.
Got Revs to do mine after seeing the state of the needle rollers and the
battle getting the old ones out of the linkages.
New piston seals in the master cylinder and new seals in the caliper
last year. The blighter was dragging so much I reckon it was losing me
    seconds on a long hill.
Sounds about the same improvement I got after having the replate and
    piston on the GFR.
I've either got to get the spanny on mine repaierd (dented and a slight
split on the seam) or a replacement. The one on it is quite a large fat
one. Not sure if you can get FMFs for that year now, I might have to
    settle for a Dep.

True. I probably could cope with a top end rebuild, but as I fancy a bit
of tweaking that may involve the ports and squish adjustment so I
decided to leave it to John.

It's a bit long in the tooth, but these older YZs are supposed to go
nearly as well as modern ones. Worth getting it in decent nick for when
the lad turns 16. We can double ride it at some meetings.

    Sidestand/clutch switch - it's always the sidestand/clutch switch.
Well unless it's one of those unreliable Yamaha things with their
    dodgy Japanese electrics.
    Indeedy, they suck mightily.
