  2. Fail to see how they'd do that without manufacturer-specific diag tools.
I'm pretty sure a generic OBD reader can't get that info from a VAG car,
even if it is possible with VCDS.

    Here's the actual EU directive...
    http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?
    uri=OJ:L:2010:173:0047:0072:EN:pDF

It only requires for a "visual inspection". Oh, and it explicitly refers
to _illegal_ modifications. So it's really only relevant to countries
    that require TuV-style approvals.

    Heh.
That's the problem with airbags though. You'll never really know if they
    work until it's too late.
He didn't even test it by sitting a drunken tramp on it and setting it
    off?

I shall be collecting my refurb MR2 G-Ltd from Belfast this month. No ABS,
Aircon or Airbags on that baby. It's lovely.

Plus there would need to be some kind of certificate that it hasn't been
    altered.

Exactly so. I had a good time explaining and demonstrating wet cadence and
threshold braking. Many (ABS) car drivers don't remember what they are any
more. I expect most motorcyclist who stay sunny side up do.

Although it has 7Jx17 Wolfraces fitted it did prompt me to fit some slightly
    superior front tyres!

At a guess, apart from the obvious: it's easier to get consistent
results. Besides which, the engines (And maybe the whole
engine/airbox/exhaust installations) are tested & set up in test cells
on a dyno, so the figures are readily available.

Says I can add 30 horses but the bluefin isn't available, so I'd have to get
the car chipped - in Alicante. I've sent them an email, but does anyone know
    what such chipping would cost?

Actually, given that I've got this 300 euro speeding fine, perhaps I
    shouldn't bother.

Selective use of the brake pedal can generate a few extra BHP...

    Not necessarily.
    Again, not necessarily.

There are a lot of variable which can have an influence over the
figures shown on a dyno - put the same vehicle in the same stsate of
tune on the same set up on a different day and you may well see a
    notable difference in the output.

Not only that, but the reason your car may be showing a certain figure
at the wheels that's less than expected might be down to your vehicle
having a defect or a poorly calibrated dyno telling fibs, amongst a
multitude of factors including ambient air temperature / density, the
fuel being used, tyre pressures etc.

IME, the best way to view the figures from a dyno at least in the
context of remaps, is as a barometer of how much improvement the
vehicle has made 'on the day' as a result of the modification(s) over
the figures generated on the 'before' runs, rather than as a
    definitive set in stone figure...

I suspect the fact that he gets the occasonal response keeps him
